    Sill Tanks

    G'Day all.

I am about to purchase a 2nd hand pair of sill tanks for my 97 300 tdi. The bloke selling them to me says they are made in Victoria by a man named Les Richmond and are for a range rover but will fit right in. They hold 45 liters on each side which should give me a total of 210 L (usable?) including the existing 120 liter tank fitted by the first owner. They are filled via the wheel arches on each side. I would love to hear from people who have similar tanks on their Disco.

    Questions I have are.

Do these tanks affect clearance? How far down do the tanks protrude?

Will I have to remove my side steps?

Are they difficult to fit, any advice?

    Any other problems?

I am paying $500 for the pair. I will probably fit them myself. Is it worth going through the whole exercise and cost for the benefit?

    Any advice is appreciated.

the hang down about 8 cm below your sills

Most probably Yes. the tank fits in the space between the chassis rail and your sill.

I haven't fitted the lra ones before but in general they are a PITA to fit.

    Any other problems?
Have a good look inside them for rust before you buy. If they are badly coroded you will forever be replacing fuel filters.

If you plan on doing any touring then yes I belive they are a worthwhile investment.
Unfortunately if you plan on going somewhere that requires that much fuel, chances are you are going to be wanting to carry a whole lot of gear as well. Now you just have to find somewhere to fit all your gear in that pathetic space called a boot.

the ones i have sit fairly level with the sills from memory

Will I have to remove my side steps?
dont think so. but i dont have side steps so dont realy know
Are they difficult to fit, any advice?
only problem i had was that the ones i bought were of a range rover also and on my disco between the chasis and the floor pan in the middle of the car on the inside there is a bracket or gusset ( which ever you prefer) that had to be removed. used a spotweld drill bit. bit of stuffing around for that but otherwise fairly simple. routing fuel lines was a bit of a pain also as you need another fuel pump to pump the fuel in to the main tank.

sound like a good price, paid that for mine. dont see them around secondhand much
I will probably fit them myself. Is it worth going through the whole exercise and cost for the benefit? definatly if your going traviling away fron the civilisation

Any advice is appreciated. i did it by myself, some help would make it better. you will need a trolly jack to lift the tank into place.

    good luck

My 98' Disco has twin stainless steel sill tanks made in the UK by Safari Equip.
They hang down about 50mm below the sills and don't affect my off road abilities that much.

I wish they had sender units fitted though and if I ever have to remove for what ever reason I'll fit senders and a gauge to monitor the levels in both tanks.

I've yet to find a decent sequence on how to fill them. Should I fill the sill tanks first or should I fill the original tank first?
Either way I've had fuel gushing out over the petrol station forcourt
The fillers are also under the rear arches so I have to carry a large funnel and an extension pipe to get the pumps nozzle in...very frustrating sometines.

Another negative point. My 2 filler caps have a key lock which gets dirt inside. Trying to get the key in can take ages if you've not opened them for a while.

Not that hard to fit, you need to drill a hole in each body outrigger and then 1 in the chassis along with a crush tube, you utilise on of the gearbox mount bolts for 1 bracket. The hardest part will be all the plumbing as you need outlet and return hoses to each tank so in effect you need a 3 way fuel tap with 2 fittings for each (6 in/out) . VDO make a universal sender unit in the correct ohm range that will fit sill tanks.
Some tanks hang down then protrude unde the sills and some are just rectangular- i'd prefer not going under the sill.
