    Buying a Disco

    Hi all,

    As the title says, I'm considering purchasing a 1994 tdi Discovery with 206k kms. It looks to be in good condition inside and out, and has had the same owner for the last 10 years. However, it is still on the original clutch and cooling system - is this cause for concern?

    Also, if people could give me some advice on what they are like to work on (I'm reasonably competent with a spanner but have never worked on either a diesel or a 4wd), and what sort of servicing costs I will be up for?

    I'm not new to driving Land Rovers (my dad has a s3 109 Isuzu and my brother a 97 tdi Disco) but I am new to LR ownership so any advice would be much appreciated, including advice for a good LR mechanic in the ACT (or nearby).

    Plenty of posts on this issue, mate. Perform a search and you will have enough to read to keep you busy for a while.
    Still same clutch ...swap it. Still same cooling system ...so it should be. Change the fluid if you wish, and check for leaks.ยจ
    You will be able to do most of the jobs yourself. Check out your brother's Disco, it's virtually identical to your model (if it's not a V8, in which case the engine will be different).

    If you can afford it, stick to the same model as your bro's - there are advantages to having the update model .

    Anew clutch installed will cost around $11-1500 depending where you go.
    Some last longer than others and cooling system as said above if well maintaoned is good to go.
    For peace of mind, perhaps a rodding and new hoses are the go but if you are doing that check when timing belt was done.
    they need changing every 80k km's and can be a time bomb.
    Get it all done at once and $2000 should see you there, money well spend for peace of mind.
    Build that into the purchase price.

    Thanks for that. Yeah unfortunately I don't have the coin for anything newer...

    Something I meant to ask first time round is about cost of 4wd accessories: any idea on how much it costs to fit up a long range fuel tank (say 110 - 120 litres), and an onboard air compressor to it?
