245/70R16 BFG All Terrains or others; this size gives 14mm overall wheel diameter increase, so 7mm lift over 235/70R16.

D1 steel rims are 16x7, same as the alloys, and as mentioned the tyres were originally 205/80R16 or 235/70R16.

For people interested in the legislation about wheels and tyres in NSW it is explained in a Vehicle Standards Information bulletin VSI-09 available from the RTA. http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registrati...vsi09_rev4.pdf

Also note: If your vehicle lists ADR24 the maximum rim width is 8" - after that it's off to the engineers for you!

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Well, just got it confirmed by an engineer. Cost $365 to get your 4wd engineered to run from 15mm to 2" over standard in dia., otherwise it is illegal. I doubt you will get pulled over and booked running 15mm oversized tyres, but....what happens when things go wrong and your insurance drops you like a hot potato??? What about all the second hand cars that have passed RWC with larger tyres and no engineers cert... could be a minefield.
Vic roads palms it off to the owner of the vehicle stating that it's up to the owner to ensure you know the requirements and you must keep your car in a RW condition. Just concerned in this litigious society you need to cover your @rse.( Ok, OK,I'm a worry wart, it comes with age)

I fitted 245/75/16 to my wagon and they made it look well shod, filled the guards better and sat slightly taller however they fowled on the rear guards when using full suspensoin articulation. So aside from the legal issues you will need to do some minor fender mods to accomodate the larger tyres.

Will your insurance pay out in the event of a prang?

I believe for an insurance company to use something like incorrect tyre size as an excuse for not paying out, they have to prove the tyres were a major factor in the event.

In all honesty i would not give a second thought to having that size tyre and being hassled for it. i run 35's on my disco all the time, i have not once had an officer mention my tyre size. As long as you have flares and mud flaps you will be fine.

I completely agree with you. But in the eyes of the law, the vehicle is deemed unroadworthy, this is what was explained to me. I suppose it depends on how far they stick to the rules.
