Hub interchange old (large PCD) for new

    G'day All,

Just wondering if the wheel hubs are interchangeable between the old (5 x 165mm PCD) and the newer Disco 2 / 3 (5 x 120mm PCD)?

Only reason I ask is it might open up some aftermarket wheel / tyre package options and I find the range of wheels for the 5x165mm PCD somewhat depressing!

Did they change anything else major or just the hub / rotor / drum spacing?

    Does anyone know why?

    Thanks,
    John

D2 hub has the bearings pressed into it. I'm 99.999% sure they aren't inter-changable. Also I'd personally stick with the larger PCD and the heavier duty studs.

Remember any older Rangie (Classic), all Defender and Disco1 rims are the same PCD.

from what I can gather you will really limit your self if you go to the series 2 PCD.....as far as I'm aware (although I dont know what your looking for) there is a far greater rangie for the old classic style

I've seen adaptors advertised in the UK LR mags, that convert the old PCD to the new one. They look like wheel spacers.

Not sure that they'd be legal here though.....

I'm sure - they would not.

Either way it's difficult - one idea would be to buy a set of whole D2 axle assemblies. At least the mods required are generally restricted to the rear a-arm ball joint assembly on the diff housing. ( A good question would be - do the rear 'hockey sticks' fit into the D1 mounts?)

Well I suppose this discussion answers my question and this idea goes straight into the 'Too Hard' Basket!

Thanks all for your helpful replies.
I honestly thought it would be an easy swap but seeing as how it isn't, I'll spend my time and effort elsewhere.

What's the biggest tyre that will fit on the stock 16" Alloys?

I'm thinking of a set of Maxxis Bighorn 265/70/16 or whatever the aspect ratio is.

Also, who makes the best springs?

    Cheers,
    John

I think your experience in this is the result of the deceptive similarity in appearance between the Discovery 1 and the Discovery 2.

In fact, while the appearance is quite similar, they are very different vehicles - the Discovery 1 is essentially a Rangrover Classic moved downmarket and restyled at minimal tooling cost. This vehicle being a runaway success, Landrover redesigned it, retaining the overall design (and styling) but with many changes to reduce manufacturing costs - one of these is the hub design, replacing a basic design unchanged since the first Landrover in 1948. (I have an idea that this new design may have come from the then owner BMW) The new design requires much less handling on the assembly line. There are many bits that look the same between the two but don't interchange.

The Discovery 3 took the process further, in that it is a complete new design, which looks sufficiently different that it is unlikely that anyoe would assume parts are interchangeable.
