    300tdi whirring noise

    hi gents (and ladies)

my d1 has developed what sounds to be a whirring sound, to describe it, it sounds similar to when you fit a gear drive to a hipo V8.

it whirrs (spelling?) up when i rev the engine, and it is evident in neutral as well as in gear (5 speed manual)

i've removed one of the fan belts and tried starting the car to see if it could be one of tension bearings, but the sound is still there

any ideas what it may be?

if im being a little vauge, let me know and i will see if i can desribe it somewhat more

it could be a couple of things

    1. could be turbo whining

does it get louder with acceleration or is it constant

check gearbox and tranfercase and make sure the fluid is clean and there are no metal filings in them.

or it could be a dry thrust bearing as they will make a noise even in nuetral.

    Give them a try

    - yeah it does get louder (well not louder as in noisier, but more different pitch - like a gear drive on a dragcar)

    - how do i change the oil in the gearbox and t/fer case, i have the rave cd, and all of that, but i just cant seem to find the fill plug, so i didnt want to empty it till i could find where to fill it from

    - how do i check if the thrust bearing is dry?

    G'day

You will find the filler bung on the driver side of the gearbox, but before you drain it you will need a T55 Torque bit to undo the filler bung for refill.

If the oil looks black and like water, you might have had the auto fluid in there. This is not used now as it breaks down after 10000 kms and no lubrication left in it.

What you have to use is a syth oil 75-85 visc. You can add this and it may help but if the noise is a gear noise it might be best to grab it now and fix it with and exchage or might be lucky ehough to be able to rebuild yours.

There is no way of cheacking for dry thrust bearing upart from taking out the gearbox, as far as i know.

    Good Luck

Go get your garden hose .... While the missus ain't looking , cut a meter length off it
Congratulations ... You now have a metre long stethoscope

Start the motor ... Put 1 end in your ear .. and start putting the other end on the motor to where you think the noise is ... Keep moving the hose around to different spots untill you finally hit the noisey area ...

You can actually hear exactly what & which part has shagged itself with this method.....

Warning tho .... Wear tight fitting clothes, and tie up any long hair .. as the fan belt loves to grab these things

Just a thought ( could be way off ) . Is it possible that it might be the tensioner pulley on the belts ? Might have a bearing gone on one of the idler pulleys as well ?????

    As i said . just a thought .

thats exactly what it was, i removed one belt, started the car, the whirring was still there, then i removed the second belt, the whirring dissapeared, i checked the bottom left hand idler pulley, it felt pretty worn, i packed it full of grease, and re-fitted the two belts, it runs nice and quiet now, i'll stop in at a bearing shop or repco sometime this week and get a new bearing, i doubt if it will cost more than $20

    thanks again

Pretty sure most of those bearings are common 6203.

Cost $4-$12 depending on brand and quality, all car shops will have them.
