Try adding an extra earth to the radio chassis itself. I had a Pioneer unit do the same thing. Turned out the interior grounding arrangement was a bit iffy after a while.
95 V8 Auto D1
Wiring fault with stereo.
It's an aftermarket alpine cd player which I've had checked - no problems.
Power is fine.
No sound except when taking left hand bends.
Checked down to white multi-plug beside fusebox - all good 6V+ with stereo at level 15.
I'm thinking earth issue, but not sure where speaker earths are.
After the mutli-plug the loom seems to disappear under heater matrix, so looks like i'll need to take dash out - really don't want to, but if needs must!
If anyone can help I'll tell Santa to give me a miss as I'll have music again for Xmas.
Thanks in advance and hope you have a disco-issue free festive period. My fix list keeps growing by the day!

Do all of the display lights on the front panel go out when you are cornering or do you just loose the sound & the lights remain on?
I do not now remember the technical name but most/all modern stereos are "double swing" ie the power to the speakers is earthed back into the amplifier and effectively the earth side is used for amplification.I'm thinking earth issue, but not sure where speaker earths are.
That is why speakers have 2 wires.
If I were you I would take the easy way and run new wires to one speaker and see if that speaker runs all the time. If not then it is not the speaker circuit but an intermittent fault in the stereo amplifier or preamp.

Thanks guys, the lights on the stereo stay on all the time, it's just the sound that isn't there until I turn left and it just comes on for a split second. If the main earth was the issue then the display and cd operation would also be a problem not just the sound coming out of the speakers.

Great idea, I'll directly wire a spare speaker to the stereo tonight and let you know what happens. With the stereo just back from having all the dry soldered joints upgraded I thought that this would have fixed my existing problem - with all the usual LR electrical gremlins I never thought about the stereo amp.
The only thing that makes me doubt this is that I tried to replicate cornering whilst the head unit was out of the dash by tapping it, tilting it, shaking, and some slightly more physical nudges, but there was no sound.
Anyway, will try direct speaker connection and post the results.

The problem might be with your speakers and not the head unit.
Have you tried removing one of the speakers and seeing if it works when not in its cradle.
The front speakers (also the rear but more so the front ones) have very little space behind them when installed and can easily touch something and short out.
This lack of space is even worse if you have replaced the speakers for after market ones as they are usually bigger.
When you corner, the speakers might move a bit and stop shorting thus start working.
Take a look at the speaker mounting screws as well and see if they are tight.
