GEN III or 4.6 - desision made

Well the desision is made, after several years of deliberating trying to determine which way to go the GEN III or the 4.6 - the 4.6 wins

The disco was put into a very well known Adelaide landrover parts supplier to day to give it a heart transplant. The reason in the end: cost, down time, ease of registeraton and still all landrover.

cant wait to get it back and go for a fang. Oh and vented disc brakes going to be fitted as well

I would have like to Slunnie but if I was going to fit the GEN III then I would have fitted the 4L80E box behind it then I would have had to fit ashcroft or maxi axles and so it would have gone on.

by fitting the 4.6 I will still have a vast improvement over standard and wont break all following bits the first time I took off in it.

For what its worth the recoed 4.6 path is the one I'd go down as well. Especially given the gear the SA mob put in those engines and the power they claim.

Can't wait to hear what you think of the Disco when you get it back.

Mind you I have owned three GenIII powered cars and they are sweet engines, not sure I'd like one in my D1 though, it would just be another good way to break things even quicker.

    cheers,
    Terry

One question I wouldn't mind asking how much difference in weight is there between a GenIII and 3.9/4.0/4.6 motor?

If the GenIII was mcuh heavier then that would stuff up all the spring and shock dampning I'd guess and make the old D1's a little less nimble possible?

    cheers,
    Terry

both engines are aluminium so they are about the same weight. the power and torque output of the GEN III is much higher therefore the need for the 4L80E auto box - the standard ZF will turn inside out, and axles etc. the latest box out of the US is the 6L80 from the corvette, very very strong and 6b speed - yum

I thought the Chevy had cast iron heads? I might be wrong but I thought the Buick based engine had aluminium heads. There would be a fair difference in weight if this is so.

Anyway I was hoping someone would know what the actual weight difference is between the two engines.

Please report on how your recoed 4.6 goes.

    cheers,
    Terry

The Rover V8 is aluminium block and heads. The Genx series of Chev V8s is the same. Hence the weights would be similar.

    Hi Guys,

A web site in the states puts a fully dressed "all aluminium (including heads and plastic manifold)" LS1 motor with T56 manual 6 speeder @ 535lbs (240ish kilos from memory).

Another site has the fully dressed LS1 @ 481lbs (220ish kgs) and the T56 box @ 140lbs (60ish kgs) making the whole lot 621lbs (280ish kgs).

The older Gen 2 motors used to weigh approx 600lbs on their own, or so one site says.

Couldn't find any info on the rover engine, anyone got anything to add?

Gen3 or the LSx series are all alloy in aus, you can source cast iron blocks and heads from Nth America

188kgs fully dressed for the LSx

Near enough to the same as a rover motor, give or take errors in measurement
