Thread: Confused about a spider

perhaps there could be a mix up with terminology...

as I wsa told that the "spider" is the plug which is fitted to the immobliser to bypass it..the reason it was called a spider is because it looks like one as all black wires feed back into themselves..like legs!!

However i then find out on here after talking about this very subject that apparently the spider is actually the box (immobilser) it's self not the plug to bypass it.

So if it is a mix up perhaps he means you dont have the bypass plug.

Is the alarm fob 1 or 2 buttons? One button means a 17vt type alarm ( Which does have a bypass plug like DB describes), but two buttons is a 10as, with the immobiliser circuit -the real spider. And it's not behind the radio, but behind the heater controls.

(And if you take your time it's not too hard to pull apart- radio first, then clock and coin tray - drinks tray, heater knobs and heater control panel, and then middle facia)

Of course, if you don't have a remote, look above where the front passengers left foot would be (Behind the cardboad), and identify what alarm (if any) is there. Google 10as and 17vt for pics.

Some have them some don't the easiest way to check is to remove the radio and feel below it. you can unplug the spider like this but its tricky if you can get it you will have to remove heater controls. you can but a link lead which you just plug in they not very expensive its not worth the hassles of trying to make your own

once you know where it is you can jsut get your hand onto it without the radio removed by laying chest down into the drivers foot well and reaching up and around with your right arm.

you cant do much other than touch and wiggle but on the side of the road sometimes its enough to get it to work "one last time"

Not trying to go against the flow or anything. But my bypass plug actually plugs in behind the kick panel on the drivers side footwell. On the right hand side.

My '96 manual TDI had the spider behind the heater controls. Took about 20 minutes to get it out, by following the instructions found on this site. Turned out to be 4 dry joints on the circuit board. A few minutes with a soldering iron fixed this and all working well now for over 12 months.
