    ........OK ...after a beautiful drive home after what i thought was a good day.....got up this morn to go to work and took off from the drive and its started all over again .....really crap for about 10k's and then settled a bit but ...turned a new corner and ...needless to say i nearly drove it into the nearest embankment to solve the prob once and for all....

    it now in the shop getting the head tested (however they do that!!?)...so will see tomorrow if I'm up for a new head gasket ...

    in this event between myself, my little bro and my bro IL we could prob do it ourselves.....is there anyone out there that has seen a really good blow by blow of replacing a head gasket in the v8?

    I very much doubt its the head gasket... youd have a lot of other issues....

    PM twitchy since his heads are off his V8 and bug him to hold the camera while I put the heads back on along with all the basic tests I do prior to assembly.

    hopefully not mate ...just thought i would get it checked ?....l guess I'm kinda hoping .....the old fuel pump was skew in its bracket and the filter was very clogged with what seemed to be sand ?...all fixed tho and it seemed great on the way home .....then today it was like driving a bloody tractor ...........?????????????????????????

    OK ...as predicted by Blknight....its not a head gasket ...as a matter of fact they said it couldn't be better ......

    so let revise ....replaced fuel pump and car was running brill for a few hours ....

    they took it for a run and (well lets just say, they looked at me like i was on drugs when i went to pick it up this arvo..lol)...

    he said "theres nothing wrong ??...its running brilliant".......

    i says "well how long has it been sitting there in the car park ?"...

    he says " a couple of hours"....

    i says "go out and start it up now" ...

    he does .........and nearly has a heart attack...lol......

    "wtf!!" he says ....

    i say "see...told ya!!!...lol"


    so now we are back to square one ...any ideas guys ....

    the next round of thinking cap suggests that you try the fuel pressure regulator and non return valve in the fuel system.

    hows the spark side of business when its running rough.

    does it run rough only at idle, under load or when its free spinning at higher RPM?

    does the roughness go away by itself or does it need a restart to cure.

    If its heat related Id be checking the coil packs for the continuity of the earth.

    not to sure what you mean but, ran it in the dark and no shorting or visable spark?

    does it run rough only at idle, under load or when its free spinning at higher RPM?
    sometimes at idle......99% of the time always under load.....

    does the roughness go away by itself or does it need a restart to cure.
    umm never relly noticed that ...sometimes you start it up and it runs fine and i think it all good and then other times you start it up and its running like tractor

    OK ..ill have to plead ignorance on that one ...but thank for the help mate ..very much appreciated..

    if as its heating up it breaking down the resistance to the earth plate of the coils they will get correct voltage then settle down and work properly.

    to test the spark grab an induction neon or a timing light and plug it onto the lead, if it doesnt work reliabley on all leads then its a spark issue and not a fuel issue.

    get the fuel manifold pressure checked while its misbehaving and see what you're getting out of it.

    It is a bugger when a couple of faults occur at once making it harder to troubleshoot. In your seperate "disco V8 sticking" thread that preceded this one you mentioned your top radiator hose was collapsing? Could be a coolant overflow reservoir cap is on the way out??

    yhea sorry about that mate ...the reason i started another was that i was really trying to nut down a specific area ....still i didn't replace the pump it would have been a problem in the short term anyway ...the tank really needed a good clean and as mentioned the in tank pump filter was chokers with grit ...so wouldn't have been helping anyway ...

    the top hose has been replaced and l Ive since replaced the cap ...i replace the cap quite often since Ive had the disco ..and now is std equipment in my tool box...lol
