Ok, after some reading and some looking at my car I discovered the fuel pump timing was out when everything was TDC....guessing the person who changed it before me may have not done things quite right. Anyhow...adjusted the fuel pump up so I could actually insert the locking pin, put it all back together and the car started.

Only problem is now it spews smoke...do I have to pull it all apart again to adjust?

Also, can someone recommend a good LR mechanic in Canberra/Queanbeyan area?

Thanks for all the replies so far.

You're close to being on target: Open the inspection hole behind the AC tensioner and try a 11mm drill with 3/8 shank as the IP lock pin - smooth the shank with emery paper and wrap the sharp edges with electrical tape. The shank just fits the lock pin hole, and the 11mm outer puts the IP right at zero. Then see how it goes.

If that doesn't work, then the timing is a tooth off - if you have the patience try it again. You'd be surprised how the parallax effect screws things up.

Thanks for all the posts and help - ended up taking it to a diesel mechanic and he fixed it for 150 bucks...he said it was "way off" which surprised me but they said it was all good now and doesn't blow smoke everywhere. Thanks again.
