    Fuel Sedimenter Problem

    G'day

    I've got a problem with the Fuel sedimenter on the disco, it looks like someone at some point in the past has tried to undo the drain plain and snapped the head off it.

    It's recently started leaking enough diesel that i've noticed it so time to fix the problem.

    I'm tempted just to drill it out while it's still on the car with a hand drill to avoid starting a fire but i'm not convince this will work.

    The car currently has a full tank of fuel in it so do i need to drain the 80 L of fuel before I undo the bolt at the top of the fuel sedimenter or will I only have to deal with the fuel already in the sedimenter.

    The other question is if it's possible to replace the plastic tap with a metal plug of some kind as the reading i've done seems to indicate this is a common problem.

    take the fuel cap off, remove the fuel line from the tank to the seperator and blow it back with compressed air.

    wear all the right safety gear.

    The sedimenter in the Disco screws in half so you could remove the bottom section and do it off the vehicle. I just can't remember if the tank will siphon out.

    You should be able to replace it with a bolt but no idea of the size (maybe M8), it may even be imperial and not metric. If you can keep the bottom half off and take it to a bolt place you may find something.

    loctite 567 is your friend if you go the bolt route.

    Just get a bolt to fit. stainless better, rubber washer or nylon

    No problems with replacing the plug with a bolt.
    The plastic plugs always break after a while and with a little too much force anyway.
    When servicing you should be pulling the bowl apart anyway and cleaning it out, so the plug is not really necessary.

    Undo the fuel line on top of the sedimenter and either lift it above the fuel tank to stop the flow of diesel or plug it with something if you have it.

    On top of the sedimenter there is a nut in the middle, undo it and the bottom of the sedimenter (bowl) comes off.
    There's also a plastic thing in there, so note which way it goes back.

    Clean out the bowl, the upper part still attached to the car, and check out the seal.

    Find a good stainless bolt to fit the drain plug hole, but leave it out for now.

    Reassemble the sedimenter, attach the fuel line and let some diesel drain through the sedimenter.

    Put in your bolt.

    You might need to prime a little with the fuel lift pump.

    Hopefully no more leaks.

    It became quite a bit more urgent after a 4wd trip this afternoon


    I tried an easyout on it first and when this failed resorted to taking the whole thing off and getting covered in diesel

    I've since discoverd someone obviously has problem with it in the passed as the surface the plastic tap o ring was supposed to seal against was covered in glue and crap. Anyway cleaned all that up and put a new plastic tap on it it seems all fine should last long enough for me to track down a stainless steel bolt

    we just completely changed ours there not that expensive I dont think...they are renouned for snapping there I believe
    Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    It's a Whitworth thread ...can't remember what size.
    Get a short bolt and use a fibre washer - be right as rain.
