Thread: tyres and alternator

Hi

Just bought a Disco a couple of months ago. Its been fantastic and i am really enjoying driving it. My alternator is only charging at around 12 volts and i was wondering if i need to replace the whole alternator or can it be repaired?

Also i need to get a set of new tyres but cant really afford a set of new tyres at the moment. are there any good places around to buy second hand tyres?

If its at 12 volts its not charging at all, a healthy battery sits on 12.5 volts. Make sure your dash warning lamp is on before you crank the engine. It should go out after starting. If no light appears, check the wires at the alternator and the warning globe. Use your meter to check the voltage between the alternator output wire (big fat brown wire) and the block, engine above idle. If its around 13-14 volts then check all the battery leads and earths. If the alternator is really dead a competent auto electrician should be able to fix it.
