    Broke my Disco

Went out on the weekend and had a ball in the wet, mud, hills etc.
On the way home, heading through a large water hole on the dirt road, I was redirected off the road and into a tree. Unfortunately no bull bar so I think he may be a write off. The radiator was pushed back into the fan (but no coolant loss ensued). Drove it home and the next morning to the panel shop. But no further methinks. Waiting on the insurance company to advise further.
    Pics below.

You should have first option on the car if they decided it is not economic to repair. Try to keep it off the Written off vehicle register, and unless it's due for rego soon, find the panels yourself - whilst it looks ominous, both the inner guard and front apron are reasonably replaceable, if not rough-as-guts fixable. ( There are a few D1's being dismantled not that far away from Lismore ) It may look like a bit weird, but the next time you bounce off a tree you won't feel so unhappy.

I've got bonnet, guard and front support sitting in the garage, will part with it for beer.

Unfortunately I don't have the time or the money to repair it. Rego runs out next month and I need a vehicle on the road asap. If insurance won't repair it I'll have to take the payout and get another vehicle.

don't let the insurers take the car!
take the payout (economic right off) and buy it back off them, should only be a few hundred, what they call the recovery fee or something.
As it's still in pretty good shape, you should be able to sell the wreck for more than the insurers recovery fee. An easy to way to make extra profit

This is exactly what I did when I hit a bull in my D1. Drove it around for 6 weeks until the insurance finally decided to write it off. Took the payout, paid the salvage fee ($1500 in this case) and used the money to buy parts.
    Its all good now.

Insurance company came back today. Definitely a write-off. Won't let me buy it back. Point blank refused.

    can they do that?
they probably know it's worth a fair bit as a wreck as a lot of it's in good shape, so they want to sell it to recoup their payout expense.

But i reckon follow that up higher, did they give any reason why you can't buy it back?

edit: actually, might be different in comprehensive claims. I'm only experienced with claiming on other people's insurers
