    The snorkel's connected to the...?

    Hi folks
Well now that I have a D1 in the family too, I'll probably be dropping in here a bit as well...

Now one of the first things I'd like to know is, as you can see from the pic, the snorkel's not attached to the airbox. So exactly how is it meant to attach?

There's a big hole in the front which I assume was the original air intake, but there is also a galv plate that has been attached to the lower, inboard side of the airbox - is there where the snork should enter?

    Cheers
    Mike

Take the lid off the cleaner and see if there is a hole cut inside and they have blanked it off with that sheet of alloy that's screwed on.
Snorkels have another elbow that connects to the air box from the side and the front hole is blanked off it may depend on what brand and peetrol/diesel vehicles

The snorkel just needs to connect to the bottom of the airbox somewhere. An ideal option would be if you could spin the bottom half of the airbox around 180deg so the inlet is facing the snorkel - which can then be connectd using an elbow.

on my old one, which looked like an aftermarket kit.
it was connected to the engine facing side (where that shiney aluminium plate is bolted)

id unbolt that and you may find a handy hole

looks like you're missing the connecting pipe. although it looks like yours enters the engine a bit further back (difference in snorkels brands?)

shot of mine, enters the side and front hole and has been blanked off

Hey 2 rocks, welcome to the D1 section!

As mentioned, it does depend on what brand it is as to how the manufacturer attach them.

It also depends on whether the car has ABS or not, as this takes up some of the space.

I know the engine is a Tdi, it looks to have no ABS as well as the metal blocking plate which would also indicate no ABS, and it appears to be a Safari snorkel.

So the Safari one (as intended) attaches to where the metal blocking plate has been put (for a non-ABS car).
Below is a picture of the main kit pieces, which shows you are missing the stupid shaped platsic ducting that goes from the inner guard to the box.
As isuzurover mentioned a more direct route would be nicer, but this is how mine is attached and it appears to work fine.

This is the ABS version below, where the airbox is spaced out from the guard a bit and the ducting runs down the inner guard and in the other side of the box (to the non-ABS version). The ABS version can also be used for a non-ABS car.

The Safari website is good, and gives clear pictures and installation instructions: Safari - Snorkels
It also appears from their website, that Tdi or V8 is the same kit, the variations depending on non-ABS or ABS (although the ABS one can be used on both).

Without purchasing the Safari duct, you could just get some round flexible hose ducting and run it from the inner guard hole around the box and straight into the original intake on the front of the box.

Just edited the post above (you were too quick for me), the Safari website states that the ABS version can be used for both ABS AND non-ABS!
But the non-ABS is ONLY non-ABS.

    Hi Alton
    (Hope I spelled that right?)
    Thanks for the welcome!
Definitely Safari & definitely non-ABS...that fascinating bit of ducting is not what you'd call "free flowing" is it?
I'll duck over to ARB and see how much they'll want to sting me for a replacement item and something to blank off the front inlet (silicone & the cap off a can of fly-spray ).
Depending on their answer, I mght go the universal ducting route into the front of the box as you suggested...
I think I might pull the airbox & inspect & remove the plate first to check for any damage from when they removed the original ducting - you never know .
    Many thanks guys!
    Cheers

As you mentioned - doesn't look very free flowing. If it was me I would drop in to a truck fittings place like engine protection equipment at Myaree, and see what they can do for you in terms of ducting and elbows.
