Hey 2 rocks, welcome to the D1 section!
It also depends on whether the car has ABS or not, as this takes up some of the space.
I know the engine is a Tdi, it looks to have no ABS as well as the metal blocking plate which would also indicate no ABS, and it appears to be a Safari snorkel.
So the Safari one (as intended) attaches to where the metal blocking plate has been put (for a non-ABS car).
Below is a picture of the main kit pieces, which shows you are missing the stupid shaped platsic ducting that goes from the inner guard to the box.
As isuzurover mentioned a more direct route would be nicer, but this is how mine is attached and it appears to work fine.
This is the ABS version below, where the airbox is spaced out from the guard a bit and the ducting runs down the inner guard and in the other side of the box (to the non-ABS version). The ABS version can also be used for a non-ABS car.
The Safari website is good, and gives clear pictures and installation instructions:
Safari - Snorkels
It also appears from their website, that Tdi or V8 is the same kit, the variations depending on non-ABS or ABS (although the ABS one can be used on both).
Without purchasing the Safari duct, you could just get some round flexible hose ducting and run it from the inner guard hole around the box and straight into the original intake on the front of the box.
