Looking at a D1 which seems like a really great car and like it's been kept in pristine condition all it's life...interior still mint, no rust or scratches, plastic thing still on bonnet, under 200,000km etc.
I wanted a pre-purchase check of some kind and there isn't a Landy mechanic close enough to organize something easily and RACV want $300 for their check which seems kind of thorough but it's starting to push my budget for something that will probably end up telling me some pretty generic things that myself and a Landy experienced friend will probably be able to find out about it anyway. The only thing they really do that we can't is a test on the cooling system to make sure it doesn't leak by the sounds of it.
Does anyone think an RACV check like this is really a MUST or do you think it's a bit of overkill. I'm getting it a pretty decent price too so even if there is something small that pops up I won't be too concerned...I just don't want the engine to blow up on me or anything big like that.

Agree with utemad.
Try a Landy dealer or take a chance.
Does it have service history, can you see any leaks, go for a longer drive and see where gauge sits, should be just below half way.
Check oil, coolant colour, oil leaks, handbrake and aircon plus all the usual like window electrics and radio.
When u get it, be prepared to shell out some $$ for major service and new hoses and fluids etc.
Not sure if its diesel or V8 but either way, new belts and hoses give peace of mind.
I do often buy cars sight unseen, the owner does instill a certain degree of confidence, if well kept in respect to interior and exterior, it often not always goes for the drive train etc.
Don't hold me to it though as there are exceptions.

Its to the RACV,s advantage to point out as many faults as possible.
If u dont buy the car based on their report you,re back to square 1.
You,re $300 lighter & still looking for another car................which u will proly want a report on.

That's what I was thinking about an RACV check. My 4WD/Landy experienced friend and I will be able to look at it properly and see if it's got any bad leaks and check out the coolant etc. The seller also claimed that on long drives (he regularly drives an hour commute to work) the temperature gauge sat on around 1/4.
Also it's a V8 on gas for those wondering.
Apparently it's regularly serviced by Ultratune which I trust seeing as the guy doesn't seem shy of spending the right money to keep his cars in good order, although he doesn't keep a logbook of hard copy service history.
