It's made from a foam type material that doesn't disintergrate or fall apart like the rover one when it comes into contact with something.

    Hope this helps.

Good question.... but my Disco is a Gulf spec car and it had a noise reduction blanket on it when I bought it new...when it started to get a bit ripped up I decided to replace it with something that I think will last much longer.

Being Gulf Spec my car has the up-rated cooling & Air-con system which really seems to be much better than standard vehicles. I've never had a cooling issue but if I did then I might have looked at removing the under bonnet insulation.
In saying that....Land Rover do extensive hot weather testing here for the rest of the world market and the Discovery never had any bad cooling issues anyway.
My Disco was one of the test cars for the Gulf Campaign Kits or 'Saudi Spec grills' that people associate with the kit.

If your car wasn't coping with the heat in Queensland then I would have to say that it had maybe it had a few problems else where in the cooling system. I'm not from that neck of the woods though so I shouldn't really pass comment on whats an acceptable running temperature and whats not.
I can tell you that during one of our desert races in which I run in the sweep team...my 4.6Efi will clock up 100's of miles through the soft sand each day and I don't have to worry about my temperature gauge.

    Regards.

well im in tassie so it doesnt reach extreme heats here. the reason i asked if it would matter is because mine is sagging right down on to the intake. i have also had a problem with over heating. my rover has the 3.9 and due to difficulties finding a nylon radiator filler tank for the v8 model i have had to change hoses and mounts to suit a tdi tank which seems to be keepin the pressure quite well. but if its safe to run with out a blanket...... ill rip it out!

I really don't think it would do any harm one way or the other to take it out then.
If you need any help sourcing a new header tank then we have lots over here and I could get one sent over to you.

    Thx.

Take it off, (unclip it from the bonnet) place it upside down on ground, with some pieces of wood underneath to hold the sagged bit back up. Get some fabric stiffiner (like PVC glue) from Spotlight or crafty shop. Water it down a little and paint it onto the sagged area-(back). It will soak it up and dry hard in a few hours. Put it back in and good as new.

    Cool Remove it!

I took the insulation stuff out from under D1's bonnet about 14 months (10,000K) ago, got sick of it "bagging" down onto top of engine.
The only thing I noticed was a little more engine noise from the Tdi, no blistered paint on the bonnet, no other ill effects so I figure better off without it.
Bonnet is lighter to lift now
Someone had previously tried the "sikaflex" trick, it only causes the stuff to de-laminate, and then fall away again.
