i dont have a rattle, only hash vib at 90km at 2000-2100 more up hill or towing
rulled out the brake shoes in handbrake drum
i tend to think that if this new rear end dosent fix it
??????? could be coming from the torque converter
dont know if true or dribble
but work had trouble with these when they first came out with rear end trouble
solution replace the whole rear end, told father inlaw he dismised it because he hasnt had to look at one yet, owning landrovers all his life

replaced rear axle whole asembly on the week end
vibration still there:( when the truck is warm it is more Pronounce
i had a bukkled rim, borrowed spare set from father inlaw vibration still there:(
feel like selling starting to cheese me off:mad:
still vibrates at 2000 rpm about 90 ish :o
found on one forum about upgrading torque converter to modified v8 disco converter still dont know if it is torque converter related
any thoughts would be good as this is a bad and anying vib
when warm i can now make it vibrate on a flat road :(

Having replacing my T/C with Ashcrofts uprated version, which by all means I advocate doing, can confirm some of the vibrations as well as the dreaded auto drone are still there.
Take a look at the attached Driveline Vibration Troubleshooting guidelines for the D2. It is a NAS LR Tech Bulletin (dated 03/07/03) but can't see why it shouldn't apply to the rest of us.

The NAS is formatted differently and some steps are broken down further - a paragraph in the ROW procedure could be 3-4 steps in the NAS version - but the procedures appear to be the same.
There are some differences in the replacement parts information for ROW.

Have you tried dropping your front prop shaft out and going for a drive?
Have you tried dropping your rear prop shaft out and going for a drive?
When i had my TD5 i used to look at that sucker when it was idling and think how rough running they were, i dont think it is possible to smooth them out when you think about it a 5 cylinder diesel has got to be harmonically quiet disturbed.Lets face it they are a very nice tractor engine.
And i mean that in a nice way.

hi i was diving the discovery the other day got the disco to shudder/ vibrate at 80-90 when the auto dropped into what i call toque converter lockup :o
and contiued to smooth out, when i pushed it, it was smooth for a short while and then the shudder/ vibrate came back harshly is this auto clutch slipped
yes i have dropped booth front and rear shafts, drop back shaft vibration gone but with only the front shaft driving it, didn't seem to allow the auto to lock up
any help would be good

Start with the cheap stuff i think.
When i was a lad we used to dynamic balance and straighten tail/prop shafts some of them can be pretty bad.
Make sure the unis are replaced if the balancer doesnt say this will be done as a matter of fact go somewhere else.
so ive been following and posting in the ultimate td5 vibration thread till now and found this one and read through it.
got me inspired to have another look at mine.
when i bought it, there was a 2-2.2k rattle that turned out to be the handbrake shoes and this was assembly was replaced fixing this. but after time come to realise there was still a rumble/vibration at the same rpm range.
sounds a bit like the exhaust (but its not) and more noticeable from drivers side.
So took rear shaft off again and went for drive and the noise it gone. Happy just to hear what its like without the noise, and that it is actually ment to be quieter and its not just me.
Haydent, this is good. There is now three of us that are experiencing the same issue. Although Storm says his happens at a certain speed and not RPM. Mine is not speed, and therefore, not road speed specific. Pure RPM based. Remove the rear shaft and it pretty much disappears.
As you've read through the thread you'd have read what I've done. 3 different shafts, rebuilt TC, new engine mounts, gb mounts, exhaust mounts etc etc. It is NOT a 5 cylinder thing. That is, yes it is originating from the motor but the vibration is amplified somewhere through the drive train. There are a heap of 5 cylinder motors out there and they don't do it. So I'm kind of saying it is and it isn't. All motors have that funny spot. Even the m62 in the Rangie.
I've read threads where people get vibration and rattle mixed up. They say they have a really bad vibration and it ends up being a loose exhaust heat shield....so a rattle only.

Before jumping in to AULRO I was actually just looking at what other cars I could buy for the same money I could sell the Disco for. Will get something German. I've owned German cars before and have had no issues. Maintenance costs are extremely low. And they are great to drive. VW passat maybe..
Just means I'll have to take the Rangie off road
