    dead duck disco

Hi all, Ive owed my disco 2 v8 for six months now. The problem i got and i know everyone has been there so how to fix the problem with the coded keys. Why do i have to pay to 300+ dollars for a $2.50 key to make the disco go, how can i bypass the transponder as i dont need it , also how does the vin number have anything to do with keys. Please help me if you can.
    A dissapointed disco owner.

The only thing you can do is replace the keys, although this seems expensive $300 upwards is a fairly standard price for many late model vehicles with some costing over $1000.00 with up to a 3 month wait for a programed key fob.

Talk to your dealer or autologic equipped independent specialist

replacement key fob buttons are now available from aftermarket suppliers
    to suit your disco 2.

if you replace the buttons (costs about $10-$40) before you wear the key out completely this will save you a bundle.

    keys and the vin

thanks for that, i know that i can get full keys shipped from the states or from the uk for around $100 but how does the vin number make the keys work. Is the vin number programmed into the computer, because if the keys dont suit the vin good luck getting it programmed, maybe I should get my chinese friend to hake the system to bypass it so that I can start it without the transponder. Any ideas how this can be done as I dont really need to secure the car to that level. and this will save every one a heap of money. I just want the central locking and a kill switch any reply to this would be greatly appreciated by me.

Hi Judge, I live on the Bayside also. If you want to give me a call on 0406-181-810 or a PM with your contact number I can probably help you out with this query and get it all sort quite easily. I also have a nanocom that will help with programming purposes. I have had to do this sort of thing with my Disco 2 with no great dramas.

I maybe be wrong but i dont think the keys from the U.S or the U.K work here in aus, they use a different frequency and wont work on our cars.

Hi Rhi, They do, you just have to specify the 433khz. I got my second fob from the US (specified the frequency) and it works a beut.

the problem you will have buying a key from america is that it will need to be programed by a dealer or specialist and they may not program the key if they didn't sell it.

The vin number shouldn't be needed to order a disco 2 key (other then the fact that they're 2 different keys depending on the year)
discovery 2 keys are not programed to a vehicle until after you buy the key

other cars i.e range rover p38 are programed in the UK so after you order the key it's ready to use however you have to wait a couple of weeks.

A friendly member with a Nanocom will be able to program the key without a problem.
