TD5 CAT PIPE, DECAT OR CATGUT????

Was contemplating in traffic, as I do, whether or not to replace the cat pipe with a decat version or just gut the existing matrix from the original.....

A few of the aftermarket ones I have seen use the braided flex pipe which tends to be a bit short on lifespan and the higher quality ones are the same as the bellows type fitted but are hugely expensive for what they are and really for what its actually going to achieve dollar for dollar.

Mainly this is prep work for the Tombie map going into it soon.

    Anyone done the gut???

    Cheers

The standard bellows type of flex joint is very restrictive due to the design of the internal limit-stop, much more so than the cat. I replaced the bellows (because it was rattling) with a 6" long wire one and noticed an improved throttle response immediately off idle witht he Tombie ecu upgrade and I/C.

    How did you go?

Hi Guys, I have just purchased my first Landy. A MY02 Discovery SE7 and since searching the net have begun the early stages of engine mods . So far just blanked the EGR. Have a remapped ECU to be put in and decat downpipe (yet to go in. ran out of time the first time I had it unbolted and couldn't get the old pipe past the cross member ). Thanks to Linn Rover in Kewdale for the supply of second hand bits (ECU, downpipe and Samco silicone hoses). Just with the EGR blank saw improvements so really looking forward to getting the ECU in on Tuesday.

I just wanted to hear reports of others who have done the downpipe themselves as struggling with the room in there and read various views on whether to remove cross member or not??

Big thanks to all regular posters, glad to have access to vast knowledge and experiences. Feels like a great club to be member of AULRO

In the US a few years ago, all the auto stores were selling "test tubes" for most popular makes. These were a suitably sized and shaped piece of tubing designed to replace the catalytic converter. Supposedly to "test" whether the converter was restricting exhaust flow excessively and needed to be replaced. Sold with warnings about laws requiring all emission controls to be in place and operational and that the tube was purely for testing purposes and should removed and replaced with an operational converter after testing. Yeah! Sure, Ted.

The early TD5's did not have a cat anyway, so imo replace it with a non-cat downpipe.

I just put a Terrafirma de-cat pipe and the same brand centre muffler removal pipe in my 02 TD5. Made the note really nice and the turbo spools up much faster. Also dropped the egt's a bit. Well worth it in my opinion. Definately something that should be done with a Tombie retune to take full advantage of it.

Just put the Terrafirma decat pipe in. Get a really nice spool whistle particularly when cold
Idling in park it's just audible then put it into gear and you can hear it start to spool! Can hear it at the tailpipe all the time when you stand at the back.
Have left the main muffler in for now.

Started it up with no pipe on the turbo and was actually surprised at how quiet it actually was! Went for a quick flog around the holding yard... sounded noice!!

    Cheers
