Thread: Airlockers

I have f+r air lockers in for about 15 years.
When they were installed they only lasted about 2 weeks before they developed a leak. Replaced f&r seals under warranty, 4 weeks later the same deal, compressor cutting more in than out, Replaced both f&r seals again under warranty. Faulty batch of seals x2.Since then I have not had any issues whatsoever. I would not be without them for a serious 4wd.
I would check/change the seals before putting them in

I saws those too. Quite a bargain.

Given what you paid for them I'd just bolt them in and smile
They were already fitted into D2 diffs so as long as the bearings are alright I'd just test them with the air compressor you got with them to make sure they work and bolt them up.

make sure you check for end flote on the pinion, also it might be an idea to check the backlash on the crown wheel and pinion, you will need a dial gauge to check it acuratly, about 0.20mm-0.25mm is a good amount of backlash

freight was a bit of a killer, but still ended up a good deal

ahhh, decisions to be made.

I just recently bought a "new in box" RD128 to match the RD56 rear we've always had. I was going to buy those to re-hock separately. I nearly went harder at it but then I thought what normal person needs four airlockers. Seemed like a dangerous way to possibly end up with another Rover altogether!

Do you have any idea what mileage they have done? If it's over 200K, you might want to consider splitting them to inspect/replace the thrust washers. They do loosen up over time and give you a few degrees of slack in the drive line.

Unless you are doing very very serious rock work, IMHO you would be better off offloading one locker and putting that money into Hi Tough/Maxi axles on your locked rear diff. You will then have a traction controlled front diff that has no steering limitations of a locked diff and will be kinder on your axles and CV's.

yeah that's pretty much my thoughts.
although that being said, the more time i spend in this thing offroad, the more serious i want to go with it, hehe.
maybe i will just fit the rear locker and leave the other in the shed for the minute, go playing and see if i want more traction.
