The Story of my D2 concerns now with turbo

A bit of a background 12 months ago i purchased a D2a td5 auto sls with 84K on the clock purchased for $24.5K which was a very sensible purchase and functionally did what we needed towing the caravan wife and 4 kids. I decided that i wanted all the luxuries and a bit of a project and put some $ back in my pocket. Then just recently i found a 2000ES TD5 auto with 160k with abs and transmission issues. Purchased it for $9.5k sight unseen (that is a whole other story). The things i knew about car.
    New fuel regulator
    new injector harness
    4 new discs and pads
    radiator and turbo hoses replaced
    recent coolant fluid change
    regularly serviced.
absolutely filthy car mud inside and out.
Since having the car i have
replaced pump oil bolt original was still tight no sludge at all in sump very clean. put on new filters etc.
    new maf
purchased one of the last nanocom
    $1200 on abs
    $500 left hand rear hub
$70 new injector harness with LRO modifications (see pic)
$2200 on transmission a friend who is a transmission specialist and extremely fussy did all the work while i did the running around $700 on parts one of the clutches had broken. Had torque converter reconditioned by TCT in clayton (see photo) it was flushed new internals and they welded a strengthening plate around the spiget to stop the potential cracking that can happen. replaced some orings and checked bearings in transfer box. It has the cdl internals so just bolted on lever to use diff lock if by chance i need it.
$40 on turbo modulator which brings me to my issue, inside the filter box was mud in the bottom and mud splashed onto the face of the MAF!!!! i finally worked out that the mob who serviced it last guided the locating lug on the lid of the air filter box into the box and clamped it down bending the lid and leaving a gap. That has now been resolved however while i had the turbo hose off cleaning it i noticed that the leading edges on the turbo blades were rough and blunt(see pic). they spin freely and it sounds ok i am just wandering if it is a potential issue and what can or should be done.

I have to say i love this new car we can do anything go anywhere and do it in luxury. I am on the way to knowing it extremely well.

Happy to discuss anything i mentioned and apologise if i have made mistakes.

    Regards

I saw this car on carsales and was seriously considering in buying it. But the owner was a bit reluctant to answer any of my questions and redirected me to the dude who serviced the car. He told me it had gearbox trouble, which you fixed by the looks of it. Looks like it will give you good service. Absolute barbain, as its an ES with sunroofs the lot.

Re the turbo modulator, this can be disconnected and bypassed, it won't log a fault...the defender doesn't even have one.
Also have you fixed the ding in the door?

if it dosnt over boost...and it will....you will have to adjust the wastegate rod along way to keep it under the boost cut off.

If the freeplay in the shaft and clearances are ok, then you dont have anything to worry about. Unless you were using it in competition and 100ths of a second counted. Most drivers wouldnt be able to discern if there was any difference between yours and a new one.

The only concern is that the junk which abraided the blades has gone into your engine. There is nothing that can be done to undo that.
If you are going to lose sleep about it, you could get the turbo rebuilt or buy a new one.

    cheers

Thanks for all the replies, Henrick it is the same bloke i had quite a few discussions with him and he emailed me the invoices of what he had spent one was for $4k. I have already replaced the modulator and it runs better than ever. Of all the D2s i have driven this is one of the smoothest motors with only slight roughness at 2300rpm better than my D2a which is now sold.

I had Damien at Peninsula rangie replace the front pinion seal yesterday as there was a leak for $122 inc. which i was pleased with. Damien happy to help out with things i am doing myself. Had alignment done this morning as it was out slightly.

Things left to do now are that i will probably do the EGR and maybe fit a snorkel more for dust.

    Regards
