Thats normal. Its just because the torque converter is locked up.
When I was having auto problems (self induced) my TC wasn't locking as how you have described other autos. It really wasn't very nice to drive like that.
Hi all,
A quick question about the TD5 auto gearbox...
When travelling at around 100 kph the car is working at about 2200 rpm. If travelling at this speed downhill etc, when I take my foot off the accellerator, should the gearbox shift into "idle" revs when coasting. ??
In other autos (not LR's) I have driven this seems to be normal behaviour.
In my TD5, the car just holds the 2200 rpm, and gives the car an engine braking effect, even when coasting downhill.
At lower speeds (and possible a lower gear) the car will drop to about 800 rpm when coasting.
Otherwise the car drives perfectly, so not even sure if this is a problem or not.
Any feedback appreciated.
cheers,
Dan'l

OK, thanks for the reply
Pretty well anytime you back off the accelerator in a TD5 with the ZF transmission it will drop back to idle.
Normal behaviour, just a characteristic of the transmission.
Trev.
and really the only downfall of taking a ZF off road,,
that OH CRAP moment when you think the cars just going to run away,,![]()
