Water ingress into engine essentials: how to prevent a TD5 drowing?

I've been doing more water crossings lately (2003 D2a TD5), and have thought about a snorkel. However, I've seen footage of TD5s with snorkels drowning due to ingress water into the engine. Not sure if it was due to water in the ECU or small holes in the air box.

So, what should be done on top of getting a snorkel?

    Cheers,
    Discomarsh.

    water ingress

Usual culprits are poor sealing at snorkel/guard flanges, poor top seal on air box and the small vacuum hose that enters the air box just near the radiator.can come adrift or split.

And I'm not sure where I picked it up but the hose from the gaurd to the airbox is porous also

The TD5 has a duckbill on the bottom of the airbox to let dirt out of the airbox. It opens into the wheelarch and it doesn't really seal. In that video it probably went underwater and the motor has managed to pull it through into the intake.

You might be able to silicon it up or swap it for a V8 airbox which doesn't have it. The snorkel in that case wasn't submerged.

I was concerned that the water hardly went over the bonnet, yet the engine failed. The link that Alien_D2 posted also highlights the weakness in the airbox you mentioned.

Just keep in mind a 4wd is not a submarine / boat...

Whilst, with some preparation they can cross deep water - they are still a land based vehicle not a marinised craft, and as such where practicable should avoid deep water

I keep a bulldog type paperclip to snap onto the duck bill if going in deep. I think the duck bill is there to let out small amounts of water that may get into the air intake. Possibly useful if you have a forward facing snorkel in a downpour.

The other essential for a D2 is to fill the little gaps at the bottom of the door seals. For some insane reason LR built these into the seals and they leak real bad.

There are a couple of ECUs on the left side of the passenger foot well. You really do not want water filling inside for a lot of reasons but there are a couple of good ones.

I have not read of anyone drowning the engine computer up near the battery but I have read that some suggest it needs to get extra silicon.

And if you have an auto, remember the ECU for the auto is under the passenger seat,a wonderful place for water crossings

You should also use a blind across the front of the vehicle as in some instances the fan can be pushed into the radiator,as a few people on this site have found out.

This is also a common problem with LC100's
