    D2 Tyre Pressures

I have had Wild Spirit Radials TXR LT 245/75R16 M+S tyres fitted. The supplier suggested 40psi all round for the bitumen but could not quote on the normal /full load aspect.
    Any suggestions please?

    Good question Len.
I have the same size tyres and run factory pressures. 190kPa front, 260kPa rear (I think).
When off road I drop them down to 140kPa all round for the hilly rocks & mud.
I don't know if this is right, it's just what I do.
It would be good to know what others think.

I have the same size tyre in Maxxis Bighorns and I run 36psi front and 42psi rear on road and this works well.

The tyres have done 12,000km now with no real sign of wear.

All tyre places seem to state 40psi for ALL off-road tyres. Personally, I think it's just lazy!

Worth giving the manufacturer/supplier a call and get their opinion?

I called Hankook to get their recommendations for my particular tyres and what they recommend for my particular fitment.
A different tyre and size I know, but just throwing in an experience I had:

    I'm running Hankook RT-03's size 235/85r16's on the V8 D2.
I told them that my fitter (Hankook dealer) stated 40psi and they were shocked.

They said for these tyres I should be running 50-60psi on tarmac, and 70psi when towing. After taking them up to 50psi, the ride got noticeably smoother, much less road noise, and noticeably better consumption. It handles far better on the road, and so far, no excessive wear is noticeable.

I know another D2 driver (TD5) running the same tyres. He has also stated noticeable similar differences changing from 40psi to closer to 50psi.

Though I must state, this info is for this particular tyre brand and size, and obviously may not apply to ALL tyres.

    My 2 cents anyway...

70psi is high, however I just found their specs and it states max pressure 80psi for the RT03's.

If I remember correctly my 245/75/R16 state on the sidewall a maximum pressure of 50psi.

    Owner's manual states: All tyres (normal conditions) F 28psi R 38psi
    (loaded to max weight) F 28psi R 46psi.

It quotes these figures for 16 or 18 inch tyres.

So who do you believe, the maker of the vehicle, the tyre maker or the tyre fitter?

I'm using 28/38 on Goodyear 245/70R16 and have no problems with handling, braking etc. Admittedly no off road.

I suppose that would depend on just how close to standard spec your tyres are.

If I was running the tyre size and type as LR supply on the vehicle, I'd be using their recommended tyre pressures.

But when you start fitting mud or other "specialist" tyres (especially non-standard sizes), I'd give the manufacturer/supplier a quick call and have a chat about your particular fitment. Only takes a few minutes. After all, they make and design them, so should have a marginally better clue than your average "sell and fit" workshop.

Just playing it safe, these round rubber things aint cheap downunder!

    Cheers,

Also remember that the vehicle manufacturer usually specifies tyre pressures for comfort and not for extended tyre life.

I found the 28psi in the front too low for tyre wear, even with the 18 inch rims.

    My experiences anyway.

I put this in another D2 tyre thread Len, but I am running the same size Goodyear Silent Armor's and they say on the side wall to use the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressures! So that's what I do.

Being at the other end of the country from my vehicle atm I think the loaded is 36 / 42 but don't quote me.
