Is the brake light the one for the handbrake, perhaps a faulty switch or poor adjustment?

The ABS pump working for TC suggests there's nothing wrong with the electrical workings of the ABS modulator but there are modulator valves (inlet valves) that could be stuck open due to very dirty fluid from never having been bled properly. Just because the ABS pump runs for TC (or HDC) doesn't guarantee there's pressure in the lines to operate the brakes.
Does the ABS pump run when the brakes are slammed-on on gravel?

No and they locked up on the dry road with the old worn tyres that were on it.

Fluid at the calipers is very clean and new looking. dose it need a power bleed to bleed the abs.

Should I take the modulator apart to clean up the valves before I bleed the brakes as I am in the middle of a caliper reco.

If so will I need any parts?

    cheers

Was the ABS pump running whilst the wheels were locked? I suppose it might be hard to hear with the wheels skidding.

Don't take the modulator apart to clean the valves. Do a power bleed (with the ignition off) with a wire with a spade connector on each end (or a lead with a switch on the end) in place of the ABS pump relay. This will run the ABS pump and draw fluid through all its valves as you open and close the bleed nipples. If there is dirty fluid it may take quite an amount of fluid to clean it up properly so be sure to keep an eye on the reservoir fluid level as is can be consumed quite quickly.

im using castrol super dot 4 (silver bottle protector series) wich is suitable for dot 5.1 aplications, when I replaced the shuttle valve switch with the falconworks kit i did a power bleed and the original repco dot 4 came out like foam where as the castrol was clear and foam free.
I could not recomend it enough, braking response stays firm to the point of the pads smoking and it will still stop on a dime.
    hope this healps.
    cheers

There are also some other useful threads about this but I can't find them right now. Possibly in the Good Oil section.
