Low Coolant Alarm and Turbo Timer

    Hi All

I am interested in the boards opinion on the importance of Low Coolant Level Alarms and Turbo Timers for a D2 TD5 1999.

    Are they really useful?
Does the Turbo timer really make a difference in lifespan of a Turbo?

    Hi DCPAus

In my opinion I wouldn't bother with the turbo timer. Ever noticed what happens to your engine temp while you're sitting still Idling for 3 minutes? It goes up. So I figure that the oil pumping through the system is actually increasing in temp not reducing. 2 low speed laps of the block off boost would do a better job of cooling your turbo. If you are keen on cooling after you have stopped, maybe adding a Davis craig fan or fans might help, then a turbo timer might help.
I have just bought the engine saver alarm and with the temp alarm all in one. My uncle just rebuilt his TDi disco engine after a coolant hose blew off. $250 in cheap insurance.
Make sure you check the oil pump bolt.
    cheers

Turbo timers dont play nice with the D2 alarm so you'll be standing around waiting for it to cut out before you leave the vehicle.

Its all about common sense and patience.

Drive gently the last km to your house (no hi boost antics) etc.. Then wait 10 seconds and just turn it off.

If you've been working it hard (towing etc) then sit there for 30 seconds and let it idle down a little...

Good, clean oil and filters and the above will look after your turbo

Coolant alarms are a good idea

Low coolant alarms are the best insurance you can get. I got one (TM2 - available via this forum) which also monitors engine block temp.

On towing the van through Tassie recently I saw the D2 temp gauge stay on 'normal' while the actual temp ranged from 65 to 105C - so I would not be without either as firstly I want to know what is going on with the engine, and as I understand it, 70% of diesel engine failures are due to catastrophic loss of coolant. As we say - it is cheap insurance!

    Cheers

Low coolant alarm is the cheapest insurance you will ever get. Do it! Dont hesitate.

As for turbo timers, X2 what Tombie2 said.

Turbo timers can void some insurance policies also, as they become a fast location of ignition wires for thieves.

    cheers
