Is it rumbling with the a/c on or off ?
If it's doing it when the a/c is off, the clutch bearing is cactus and can (usually) be replaced fairly easily without disturbing the system.
If the rumble is there when you are using the a/c, then it's probably internal.
If it is a bearing/s gone in the a/c compressor it is replacement time.
While they can be overhauled I'm not aware of anyone that does, it's usually thought to be cost prohibitive, everyone in the industry just replaces them with a new one, and yes, the refrigerant has to be recovered and the dryer/receiver replaced, system pressure tested, evacuated and re-charged afterwards.
