White smoke - Loss of power - HELP!

2003 Disco 2, TD5, auto. Just drove home from a short trip -100km or less. Refuelled on the way home. Nearly home when noticed LOTS of white smoke out the exhaust. That seemed to die down, but then very little power. Much like a clutch slipping in a manual. Lots of revs, very little movement. By the time I get home, things are improved, but still noticeable lack of power. Any ideas very welcome as I'm heading off interstate tomorrow (I hope!)

I'm thinking water in the fuel I got on the way home. Possible?

Some additional info. Just restarted it. This time heard a noise under the bonnet, a bit like a loose fanbelt, but of course by the time I got the bonnet up it had gone. Now almost no forward or backward movement. I need this like an extra bum at the moment.

Sounds like you've blown a turbo hose off.

Had a look around the turbo. Can't see any hose off or leaking, tho must admit I don't know what I'm looking at.

Can't help but think about that fuel I got, tho must admit I cant see how bad fuel would cause this.

There's a couple of sections of rubber hose between the turbo and the inter-cooler. Make sure all of the hose clamps are secure and the joints are intact. Sometimes the original ones de-laminate on the inside so they all might need replacing.

    All the best.

Sorry, but I think the suggestions re the turbo cant be right, as I now can't go at all. Ie, lots ov revs, no movement. forward or reverse. Just a slight hint that it will take off, then nothing. Just as I might expect from a manual with a totally shot clutch. But this is an auto.

Looks like my trip may be a no go.

If I'm reading this right the motor is running fine.
    Starts,runs, revs ect.. Right?

    So that leaves the auto...
Posibile that the auto cooler line has rubbed through( has been knowen to happen).
If so the white smoke was oil burning off the exhast.
Look up near radiator under the battery box for signs of leaks(lots of it If I'm right).
Trace the cooler hoses from the transmision to the front and see what you find.

    Good luck, keep us posted.
    Cheers, Kyle

I think you may have two separate issues - the white smoke, and the lack of vehicle movement.

Are you sure the white smoke came from the exhaust pipe? or just from the car?
white smoke is generally burning oil.

My guess is the smoke has come from the gearbox oil and you have cooked your gearbox, or run it dry maybe?

Must admit, not sure if the white smoke was from the engine or not. Anyone tell me how I check the trans fluid level? Can't see a dipstick.

    Previous reply dissapeared.

Must admit I'm not sure if the white smoke came from the exhaust or some place else. Can't see any dipstick for trans fluid. How do I check it?

Via a plug in the front of the transmision pan.

My hint is look for leaks, if it's low on oil it had to go some where.
