    Question What and how much?

    Hi all, following up.
My D2a TD5 no start problems:-
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...ng-charge.html were resolved with a new battery, but the M&S flashing (which dissapears on re-start) probably means a new gear selector. Is this the same as what this forum calls the XYZ selector, and what is a reasonable price to do this?

Check the adjustment on the XYZ. They are a very fiddly thing to install properly and if they are slightly out they will trigger funny things on the dash. They are spring loaded. It will be this rather than the selector. If you cant see P or N on the dash then it wont start.

    Thanks,
Nothing funny on the dash, the relevant selection eg D shows on the clock when in Drive, R when in reverse.
Can you tell me what is the XYZ, is it the selector or the connection to it?.

Its also called the inhibitor switch.

Its a little electronic black box on the side of the auto. The cable from the selector comes down to the auto and works a lever on the side of the auto - the shaft for this passes through the XYZ switch into the auto so that it can sense which gear has been selected. The car needs to know this so that it can work the auto ECU, reverse/dash lights etc, and prevent starting in gears other than P and N.

Next time it doesn't start, check to see that P is on the dash. this can be intermittent. Also, if you're faulting, then check D or whatever gear you are in is showing. If the correct gear is showing on the dash then the problem may not be the XYZ switch. If the correct gear isn't showing, then loosen off the bolts that hold the XYZ switch to the gearbox and try rotating it slightly until it works properly - bear in mind that it is spring loaded. I can't recall the cost of these, but if I recall correctly they are a few hundred dollars each.

Actually, also check the lead that comes out of the XYZ switch. When being installed it can be pulled and break the seal which prevents water/mud getting in.
    Cheers

On the no start, well before it all started were you having problem with the drivers door lock not unlocking the first time around?
I was getting that then the three amigos lights staying on few a couple of seconds after start-up for a week then on Friday the battery died.

No, you were experiencing a failing battery.

I know now the battery was failing, the 3 amigos lights started to start on for a few seconds after the engine had started about 4 day prior to the battery dying in the morning without warning.

I was wondering if the faulty door lock was another early indicator of a failing battery, or I just need to spray some more WD-40.
