    Drive belt tension

Have just replaced drive belt on my 2004 D2A TD5 as it was slipping on fan. New belt did not fix the problem .Belt tensioner does not appear to have a lot of tension. I cannot find any specification for checking weight on belt tension pulley. At only 80000 Km i would have thought belt tesioner should still be ok. I cant find anything on Rave cd. Can anyone give me any clues or should i expect to be replacing belt tensioner at 80000 km and just fit new one to try?

Putting it as simply as possible,

The belt tension is automatic, if its not tight enough then the tensioner is either faulty, or full of "dirt" and not moving as much as it should.

Could "try" to remove and clean up and see if it improves, failing that its a new one. I personally would not consider a tensioner to go weak at 80,000 km a surprise, they work hard during their life.

It "should" require a GOOD push with a spanner to relieve the tension.

My V8 belt required an 18" breaker bar on the pulley to get the new belt on and off,,

I had exactly the same problem on my D2 TD5. Still slipped after fitting a new belt (mainly when accelerating). I fitted a new tensioner today and it has stopped slipping.

When I removed the belt I tested the old tensioner by rotating it to the "released" position then allowed it to return. About half way back it slowed down considerably then gradually moved back to the "full tension" stop.

    Hi

I just put one of these on.

Land Rover Defender TD5 Genuine Tensioner & Belt Kit - eBay Engine Parts, Engines, Components, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 08-Jul-10 19:01:15 AEST)

If you have just done your belt. give gary a buzz I am sure you will get a good deal on just the tensioner. I was really surprised by the tension on the new one.

    Cheers

Was there much involved in replacing the tensioner. I've just discovered mine's starting to go (rumble in the bearing) and it looks like a right royal PITA to get at.

With the Td5, IF by belt slip you mean squealing noises under acceleration, then it may actually be a leaking exhaust manifold.....check for signs of soot around no. 1 and 5 exhaust ports, and broken studs.
