    Aftermarket fuel pumps ok?

This morning my TD5 fuel pump was whisper quiet (for a LR fuel pump). This afternoon when I turned the key it immediately started screaming it's head off.

Obviously I am up for a new pump but I am curious what sort of experiences folks have had with aftermarket pumps.

I don't have a price for genuine yet, but aftermarket looks to be about $250 from the UK. I would prefer to deal locally unless it turns out to be stupidly expensive.

    Problem Pump

    Hi

I''d stick to OE - I don't know what was put into my Td5 but it does not pick up the last about 9 litres of fuel. No joy from the LR expert who fitted it. Only found out the problem after running out of fuel 3 times.

Well the consensus is obviously to stay OEM, which I have done.

$700 later I have a brand new pump installed that makes just as much noise as the old one

I am open to any other ideas.

Fuel pressure regulator was changed less than 12 months ago.
Fuel filter is a week old but I can't figure out how that could cause so much noise.
No obvious fuel leaks anywhere and no diesel smells.

    Look for air leaks!

I would certainly re-install the fuel filter and sedimenter making sure all seals are seating correctly.

Check for fuel leaks in the plastic fuel hoses going into the top of the fuel tank. (There are other threads on this from 6 months ago). When mine wore through in January this year, my fuel pump started to scream. Took a couple of hours of driving after fixing the hoses that it quietened down. I assumed it was air in the fuel pump. Had no problems with the pump since.

Now I am worried, I just replaced my TD5 fuel pump about 2months ago with an aftermarket one. So far so good - I now wonder how long it will last. I did have trouble with the fuel gauge not reading accurately, took it back and the mechanics corrected it for me.

    Problem solvered.

Turns out, when I changed the fuel filter last week I didn't notice the inner seal did not stay with the filter. When I fitted the new filter it squashed the old seal out of the way and split it in half.

2000k's later a 2 millimeter chunk broke off the loose rubber seal and got caught in the HP outlet of the filter housing, 3/4 blocking it. .

This caused the pump to be working flat out and probably cavitate.

New pump is quieter than the old pump I think but it is hard to tell.

I may perform surgery on the old one and see if I can find the correct 'guts' to replace just the pump its self. There has to be a market for overhauling these things considering the new price.
