What model D2 ? Facelift models had it disconnected.
You could try draining the fuel filter in the back RHS wheel arch. Unscrew the drain plug on th bottom of the filter slightly (unplug harness first) and allow the filter to drain 1/2 cup of diesel into an ice cream container ... is there water in it ? It will sit on the bottom under the fuel. If there's water ... it's now drained!
If no water, it's a D2 gremlin ... which is why the water in the fuel light was disabled in the facelift models.
When you re-tighten the drain plug don't use a gorilla grip ... they're prone to breaking off when overtightened.
