Td5 "hunting" for gear change
Hi all
My 2000 td5 auto Discovery (@215K) has begun hunting for upward gear change at about 2400 rpm.
The problem is especially evident when under load, ie towing, or under rapid acceleration. A light to medium foot on throttle changes gears as normal.
The turbo hoses have been changed, and EGR bypass done.
I've cleaned the ECU circuit board and connections, their was a small amount of oil on the connections so I will have to replace the loom anyway. No dice.
The auto box oil was changed at 200K and new filter installed.
Any other suggestions much appreciated.

get a new OE MAF.
maf's play a big role in the autos performance.
there are some threads in the good oil section reguarding this issue and maf kg/hr numbers.

Bad MAFs can cause issues on the AutoECU even if the car runs fine.
Low fluid level in Trans can also cause funny shifts...

Problem not MAF
Thanks all
I renewed the MAF today but the problem remains unchanged.
Under rapid acceleration, the motor revs increase then decrease about every second, causing the vehicle to lurch and not change up a gear.
With gradual acceleration, all goes well and the vehicle attains highway cruising speed (110kph.)
It is a pain in the proverbial when overtaking, and as you can imagine not safe.
Any other thoughts?

Hi Wasa,
Was it an OEM MAF as Phil suggested? Were the fluid levels checked?
Also check your turbo modulator valve and all hoses going to it.

hunting for gear change
Maybe the slow acceleration vs fast acceleration difference is a clue?
Vacuum related? Definitely check turbo mod. valve.

Thanks guys, the MAF is Britparts from Coventrys. I'll check the boost valve and hoses and report back.
Cheers,
Warwick.

My 03 TD5 Auto did the same on cold mornings after the EGR mod was done (thanks again Tombie)
but not any other time, I checked the turbo mod valve, adjusted a turn or two (see good oil) and all was fine after that... best of luck with it, hope its a simple fix.
Cheers,
Johnsy
