    New Brake Pads

I have seen the light and just bought my first Land Rover (Disco 2) and giving it an overhaul and want to replace the pads because they squeal just before you stop.

I want to know which are the best pads to get and where?

    Thanks in advance.

There not much to be saved in switching to aftermarket brands. Most on this forum will recommed you stay with LR genuine pads as this seems to be best at preventing the brake squeal (which can trigger the 3 amigos).

I think people are just referring the 3 amigos to squealing when braking....correct me if I'm wrong

its actually the traction control, hill descent control and.....abs i think, lights on the dash which come on when you have issues with your braking systems. common fault caused by all maner of things, best way to fix it is to sell the disco and buy a defender.

My last pads were on special at Repco. No funny squeals and work a treat. Seems the 3 amigos are a frequent thing for a lot of D2 owners but I have never had the pleasure of meeting them in my 1999 D2. Even if your pads are not worn I would suggest that you give them a good service and clean and grease the calliper locating pins as I have found that mine had rusted and glugged up to the point of being jammed so the callipers did not float properly and thus under performed with uneven wear. Amazing how good it brakes now.

The 3 amigos are an ABS fault which is triggered by brake noise. One trick to avoiding these is to use pads that don't squeel. The factory pads are a given, but are dusty as all hell. I've run EBC and Bendix with no amigos, though the Lucas/TRW pads were really pushing the friendship as they did squeel a little. The EBC were quiet, the Bendix will squeel a little when hot but the compound is excellent. The TRW's are always noisy.

I've run Bendix pads for the last two changes and no squeal and no 3 amigo's. I did have the 3 amigo's with the original LR pads, however after a shuttle valve change, all fixed!

Try Bendix GCT pads. New technology, super quiet and with a great feel. However not recommended for heavy use, or for use with grooved rotors.

Do a search on Google for more data.
