    TD5 Auto Shifting Problems

Hi Everyone, I have a 1999 TD5 Auto with 133K on the clock. The auto now won't change from 1st to 2nd until it reaches 3500RPM. It also won't select reverse. Once it gets into 2nd the box works properly and changes up and down and the torque locks up fine.

I have searched the forums and posts but can't find anyone else with this problem. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
My 99 TD5 had exactly the same symptoms at about the same k's.
The cure is a full autobox rebuild.
    It should cost about$3-4K.
DO NOT TAKE IT TO YOUR LOCAL AUTO TRANS SHOP FOR REPAIRS.
Get in touch with ZF tramsmissions (you may have to google for a contact number or address) and get a fully recon trans from them.

To find out a bit more on this problem use the search facility on this site.
Search for "TD5 auto transmission problems' and all will be revealed.

Does this include hesitating to lock up in fourth until everythings a certain temperature??
Have noticed while on late shift that when I leave work, I have no traffic, its only been 5-10 degrees outside and it takes me only 2 minutes to reach the Highway home. Temp guage hasnt even moved by the time I get there. Hit 100k's and it wont lock into 4th until the temp gauge moves up the scale.

    annoys me......

    Cheers

Pretty sure that's normal, some D1s have a hysteresis valve and don't lock up until at a certain temperature, although I'm guessing its electronically controlled on the later model.

Ron Hill on the Sunshine Coast are good. They will test it and tell you what it is. They rebuilt two Disco 2 boxes that I know of. Their after work service and support is good.

Me too mate. Not quite so cold in Townsville but until the temp gauge has sat on normal for a minute or two it revs much higher at highway speeds, it almost sounds like it's in third.

    autoshifting

No! thats the way it is,the ZF auto will not not shift into 4th lock until up to temp.that`s with the temp guage in the centre and at 80Ks/hr min.speed.
    It`s a design thing...nothing wrong with the box,but sometimes annoying I`ll admit.
