    new tyres on D2

G'day all, putting two new tyres on my Disco., owners handbook says new tyres must go on back wheels, first I've heard of that. Can someone please explain--- My Disco is currently running Maxxis 235/70R16 106S, is that a good choice for a vehicle used mainly for touring, with little beach and off-road work? Or should I look at other alternatives?I know I could be opening a can of worms, but all advice will be well taken, cheers,

When I replaced 2 goodyear wranglers on my D2 I put them on the front with the thinking that the front steers the car so should have the better tyres there.

I now run Maxxis Buckshots in a 245/75/R16 for all my driving, highway, beach and mud/rock etc. and have no complaints.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I would've thought that the front wheels do the majority of the braking ... so best to put new tyres on the front for stopping power?

Just bought a set of 4 Pirelli Scorpion ATR ... but still waiting to get 'em on the beast.

    Why on the back ?

I read something on this recently. If you are only putting on two new tyres, they should be on the back. The reason given was that if you have good tyres on the back, the car will not have more oversteer in a cornering situation. Poorer tyres on the front will cause understeer, which most drivers can cope with. However, I have always put new tyres on the front, as I thought it would help the braking and steering.

I always put a pair of new tyres on the front because:
    1. more tread depth to reduce the chance of aquaplaning. Rears follow in the path of the front at speed and have a drier road.
    2. Front tyres usually wear more on the edges so buying 2 at a time means rotating the 1/2 worn fronts to the rear to increase their useful life.
