    transmission conversion discovery 2 td5

i recently had a failure of my transmition an auto zf in my td5 2002 discovery. after deciding that i dident want to pay good money to fix my auto, i decided that i would convert my auto to a 5 speed manual. basicly hear is why,

    good points.
    - one extra speed
-can be held in a higher gear and dosent kick down. to build boost (good for diesel)
-no unwanted shifting up when hill decending off road ( eg shifts hard up with lerch when in low range)
-the computer will not tell me that it has to be in safe mode when im in the desert.
-less parts i hope means lasts longer (depending on how i treat it)
-able to do key starts on hill and crawl with more wheel torque at slow speeds.

    bad bits.
-dosent shift up hill in the mud.
-now have to use 2 feet to drive.
    -dont have transmition cooler
-mud in flywheel problems when sinking
-possible to grind gears when shifting.
    -cost of clutch maintance.

after considering all the above, i have decided to have the conversion done, mainly because i dont want to **** around with a computer and default safty modes, second, i like that i can stay in 4th gear up a hill and let the revs fall down abit, my engine dosent have any power at 4000 rpm when it kicks down, i would prefer it to stay at around 3k when loaded up, the diesel likes that range. but my auto would always shift when i dident want it to.

and probably last of all, i prefer manual as a transmition because im a truck driver.

cost, for the conversion alone, drive in and out 5000 for used parts. not bad rilly say 2k for the r380 then 1k for clutch pedals bell h and cables and computer, and 2k for labor, its not rill alot of money for all the value,

secondly i paid 1150 for a brand new fly wheel and clutch. and 820 for transport round trip. so the total will be $7000 or 6150 for all the work.

i have also asked for a new engine main seal to be put in and new seals on the transmition.

so the work will take a week and a week transport. so now im just biting my nales wating for it to come back.....

it was hard to find some one to take on the project , the local land rover deler in canberra would not have a bar of it. alturnitivly a delaler in melbourne offerd to do it but had never done one.

after i called trimph rover spairs in adalade the shop forman had said that they had done them before so i was confadent he was the right shop. hence the transport fee (toll transport )

    Thumbs up

It's not like changing an XF Falcon from auto to manual huh lol. I did mine with a budget of about $800 in a day
Not to mention I believe it will add value to your car
I bought a brand new Mazda 3 this time last year ( not that they compare) but I was surprised to find, the 6 speed manual I wanted actually worked out about $1000 dearer than the auto. It used to be the other way around.
Good luck, hope all is well when she returns.

Obviously you haven't driven a chipped auto D2 in good running condition. IMHO a far better drive. I believe you are making a mistake going down this route, but hey it isn't my $$$$.

Will have to agree to disagree Justin.
I put a Toombie map into a D2a auto(Aaron40).Even after tweaking it to the max on the wastegate it still wasnt as aggressive as mine.
Mine is a AutoLogic tune, possibly a bit higher output due to being a manual.LOVE IT!!!!
I wanted an auto, but so glad I ended up with the manual.

Do diff ratios have to be concidered do be driveable?
Hope it ends up to be what you want, It'll be good to hear your thoughts when it's back.

Diff ratios/transfer ratios are the same.
The engine ECU will throw error codes as the auto wont be talking to it anymore.Should still run OK.

i have put over 7000 km on my auto d2 and it is chipped. it puts out heeps of power, im happy for any one who injoys the benifits of there auto as they have meny, that is why i listed the pros and cons of both transmissions at the beginning, however i have chosen a manual for the reasions that best sute me. i was not bagging out any one who choses an auto over manual.

having said that, i only paid 6500 for my 2002 td5 so there is a bit of give before i have to worry about return upon sale.

having said all that, i have never driven a 5 speed td5 so yes as you said i may get it back and hate it. i just wanted to clear up the fact that i was not baging out autos.

One other option to consider (unless of course you just want a manual to play with) before committing to the manual is to upgrade the auto to HP24 internals. I have just had a "special" HP22 with 24 internals built and fitted to my D2, along with a much bigger cooler, by A&B Automotive Remanufacturing in South Dandenong, and am very happy with it. The original box did not cope well with the extra torque of the 4.6 towing our 2.7 tonne caravan, but this box is sweet. Currently at Tibooburra after a thousand km of back country roads and station tracks, with lots of sand, mud, rocks and corrugations with the van, and it stays cool and works very well.
