    Another Fuel Leak....

Pulled into the driveway the other day after coming home from work and could smell strong diesel smell. Oh, no! Not the filter again! No. It was one of the fuel lines above the tank- diesel dribbling down all over the tank. Well have spent an enjoyable couple of days removing tow bar, draining tank (filled up the day before) getting a compression fitting and some flex-wrap for the lines, drums for the fuel etc. So much for Land Rovers factory recall....I know JC says he's still done a few after the recall has been done. Mine looks like the wiring loom for the tank rubbed through one of the fuel lines; anyway its now been covered with some heater hose and all the fuel lines with spiral wrap, so hopefully should not be a problem again.
    Cheers Chris.

There's a quick way to do the recall & a slow way to do it.

The quick way involved just dropping the tank enough to fit the new hose but this meant that it wasn't routed the right way & eventualy rubs through.

The slow way meant dropping the tank right down & fitting the hose properly.

    I don't need to say more, do I .

    G'Day Chris.
Same happened to me only I was 7Hrs from home in Tumut NSW. Stopped for lunch after a pleasent diversion through Wee Jasper. Smelled Diesel. Expected to see the little white plastic tap on the fuel filter to have been smashed off but no something more sinister. After all, I had a spare tap.... Found the only mechanic shop in town that was open (it was mechanics picnic day for f**cs sake!. The head mechanic, could not have been more helpful. He told me he had seen a couple of Discos that chafe their fuel line near the tank and he was sure that was the problem with mine. Fuel was p*ssing out when the ignition was on.
He made countless phone calls and made his computer free for me to use to try to track down a fuel line but to no avail. None in the country and the OEM had gone out of business. None available for at least 2 months. Our dream Snowys holiday had turned into a nightmare. With my wife and 3yo daughter and 7yo son in tow I was in a pickle, we did not have NRMA Plus coverage, it was 2pm and the Disco was going nowhere soon. The head mechanic looked after my car by garaging it every night while we continued our snow holliday in a hired commodore (the only hire car left in Tumut at the time!!!!. Fortunatly, our uncle and aunt live in nearby Talbingo and helped us out. They drove us to Cootamundra at which we caught a train home....an experiance in itself, although the country link was very hospitable and comfortable. Disco was driven back to their place leaking fuel and stayed their for 8 weeks until i got a new "green banded" fuel hose. But that is another story...............PS search "stuck in the snowys" on this forum.
    Regards Robbo.

Landrover have designed a new fuel line as of late last year which should eliminate the chaffing. Mine was ordered in August 2009 and turned up in December 2009.

    fuel pipe chaffing

    Chris,
As Robbo has said, do a search on "Stuck in the Snowys" to get his story.

I have also had two strandings from chaffed hoses and have now fixed it properly by wrapping the offending pipe in rubber hose. The first occurrence stranded us on Boxing Day 200km from home so you could imagine the inconvenience that caused!

    Another thread is:
    Leaking TD5 Fuel Tank

It's not hard to fix. Just spend the time to make sure it doesn't happen again!

    Cheers,
    Chris

Has happened to me twice. I did temporary repair last time with 150mm length of 6mm ID rubber hose and two screw clamps. Recommend everyone who hasn't permanently fixed this to carry as spare. This time after changing the fuel hose I've run a split rubber hose held in place with cable ties along full length of the hoses. Overkill I know but its worth it.
