HELP!! Newbie Disco 2 Owner - Lost key! - What's the best thing to do??
Hello all,
I came accross this forum as a result of searching countless other forums on the internet, it's local (I am located on the westside of Brisbane, QLD), most people here seem to have a real passion for the land rover and it is definately something I want to get into. I only apologise that my first contribution is one asking for help! So anyway...
Bit of a prelude - I didn't exactly lose the key - I had only owned the d2 for a week, there is an uncut spare inside the car (I know silly) and my elderly mother seems to have completely lost the other key. I have told her it doesn't matter - it's only money etc etc but she is beside herself for having done it. She loves the d2 as much as I do - she was just moving it (at the time it was at her place) so she could get her car out and absolutely cannot remember what she did with the key. I have written it off it could be anywhere. Honestly I know there was plenty of room for her to get out, she just wanted another start / drive. Got to love the old girl.
Anyway... d2 - sitting in my parents drive way, completely locked and alarmed, build 07/00. From the research I have done it appears there are two different frequencies for the remotes - I did find this a little confusing though as my VIN starts with SA rather than XA or YA. Because of the build date I am presuming I need the 4xx frequency and not the 3xx?
Again from what I have read on this forum (which has been very helpfull) It seems I will have to buy a new key/remote, get it cut and reprogrammed. I have investigated ebay for this and found that it will probably cost around $170 landed from the UK.
I would really like to avoid Land Rover themselves if possible simply because of the dollar factor.
However I did read somewhere (I have no idea if this is accurate or not) that if you purchase from a dealer and provide your vin they are able to send you a cut key that is programmed for your car? To me this seems a little far fetched but this is not really my field.
Basically I am after any pearls of wisdom people who are far more knowledge in this arena are able to provide for a newbie. I have only just got into the whole 4wd thing, found this beautiful example v8, 180,xxx on the clock, forest green I think you'd call the colour and I have encountered a little bump already.
To answer any questions before they arise - no I absolutely cannot get into the car, I would definitely prefer not to smash a window to get the spare which I don't think is even cut and I know it potentially has a screwed up remote part (it looks dodgy and is missing buttons). We have called the RACQ and they had a manual on how to get the thing open but simply - at the end of the day, couldn't do it (all credit to land rover
). They did however recomend someone in the industry who could get it open.
If there is any truth to being able to get a key cut based on the vin from Land Rover and precoded (it's the precoded thing that I am really sus on) I would go this option. I would have assumed to code it to my particular vehicle you would have to be near the computer and possibly have the car open. I guess a cut key would at least allow me inside the car.
ANY information whatsoever would be fantastic. The cheapest / easiest / fastest way to get this done would be a bonus.
So... please, any advice????
Thanks in advance.

Spare Key
I spoke to the LR Dealer just last week and they need to have your car there. I think it's mainly because people swap in and out parts which alter the frequency and they try both keys regardless.
If you really desperate and no one else can assit on this forum I'm sure there has to be some other way of cutting a spare key.
LR charge about $360 programmed and uncut and MR Automotive charge about $320 programmed and uncut.
You can also try calling MR Automotive later today, they are good for advice.
Hang in there you should get some more useful responses.
Regards
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Thanks so much for your advice, any little bit helps.
I wonder then would there be any point in having the D2 towed to a Land Rover Dealer? Actually wait... I'm not going to be able to do that unless it was dragged up onto the back of a flatbed but honestly I don't want to do that to it and I'm sure the alarm wouldn't really appreciate it either + I wouldn't be able to turn it off.
I really have to get this thing open I think and hope that the spare key fits!
Ideally I'd like to do something in the next couple of days - before the battery starts to wear down. Once the alarm starts going off I'm not going to be able to stop it.

You could have a blank key cut to suit your door lock. Then you can get the other remote out.
LR have the key code on their system & a decent locksmith will be able to cut you a key from that code.

You could drain down the main car battery - and then try and break in?
Clip a pair of battery jumper leads to the positive wire on the starter motor (can get to this by crawling under the car), and to the engine earth...then connect that to a headlight/spotlight or any 12volt power using device....leave it overnight and the main battery should be flat.
- then put honey and gladwrap on a window and break it.

For what it's worth......when I purchased my car it only had one key, so as part of the deal I told the dealer I would take it if he threw in another key (and some other gear).
He agreed, I took the car there and then and he ordered the key from LR (UK) using the VIN saying there would be a delay...there was, about 3 weeks.
Key arrived and AOK....he did not need the car or the original key, I was using both in the meantime. Bit of a wait for you though under the circumstances.

Thanks everyone for you input.
I am going to call Land Rover tomorrow.
To the person that says they bet the key turns up - I have no doubt you are right - it will turn up, probably not within 24 hours but It'll turn up - ah well another spare.
They should be able to tell me once and for what they can do with only the vin number supplied.
Cheers all!
Adam.
