    TD5 HELP!!!

    G'day all.
I need some advise (and a hand on my shoulder!!!) on my 2004 Disco classic TD5. I have just completed "fixing" my oil pump bolt and when I dumped the oil there was a fair bit more in the bucket that usual. It seemed watery. I am worried about diesel getting into the oil. I've been told that the best I can hope for is leaking injector seals, at worst, a cracked head. The car seems normal to drive with no performance issues. Are there any tell tale signs of fuel in the oil performance wise?. It has 62000km on it and I have changed the oil every 5000Km with Castrol 5W30 Edge and its never been overheated. I hope the bearings are ok. It is booked in to have the injector seals checked on the 30th, been told to expect around $450. But if the head is cracked, $4000. Just changed oil and all filters and filled it to just under the full mark. Should I stop driving it till the problem is sorted? or should I drive it to watch the level. I'm paranoid about damaging all the bearings. It is very disheatening for me as the car has been pampered since new with the best of everything. If its not perfect, I'm not happy. I love the car and plan to keep it long term and tow a van next year so naturally I want it to be tip top mechanically. Can you give me some advise? (and tell me its OK!!!!!)
    Regards
    Robbo

If you have fuel in the oil, as in lots, then the bearings is not your concern.....catastrophic failure as a result of a "runaway" is.

Have you had any such issues???

    Hi there!
Oil with diesel is thinner, and no proper lubrication goes to crankshaft bearings damage.
You should check if the oil level increase over the time, I check mine almost 2-3 days when I have some time. Check it always in the same moment, ex. with the engine cold. If it goes higher, bad news; can be an injector not spraying properly also.

    Hi Robbo.
Compared to the previous oilchanges, you say there was "a fair bit more oil in the bucket",how much are you talking????
If there was diesel in the oil I would have thought with a 5000km interval you should have been able to smell the diesel.
When you removed the sump was there residual oil in the sump that normaly wouldnt get emptied during a normal oil change??? Did it get tipped into the same bucket???? That would account for more oil than usual.
If you still have the oil and are as concerned as you are I would get it sampled. If there is diesel in there oil sampling will pick it up.Google "Oil Sampling" for somebody that does it local. Its not too expensive as plenty of earthmoving gear and transport equipment is regularly sampled to alert to engine wear.
I would drive it WITH CAUTION.Keep an eye on the oil level, make sure the ground is level to avoid false readings on the dipstick.
    GOODLUCK

Thanks Andy, the oil does "smell" but I don't know to what extent. Petrol engine oil smells of petrol on most engines that i've sampled. I have disposed of the old oil but would it still be worth geting the new oil analised? It is 150km old.

G'day Robbo ... this is a tough one ... pity you didn't keep the old oil. You've got some new oil leftover after your last oil change ?

Anyways, did you try Blknight.au's blotting paper test ?

Did you see the post about modifying the fuel return line to lower the return pressure, and help with the injector seal leaking (seems a small amount of leakage is a common thing according to what's been posted on the forum).... originally posted by "Rayor" ...

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...ml#post1288012

This is on my short list of "modifications" to do ... then you should just watch the oil level like a hawk ... you've got fresh oil in so no need to panic too quick for any driving you do unless the level is rising really quick!

... and, the oil's pretty thin and watery anyway (5w-40). I've been watching my level since purchase last May and so far, no issue's ... I run my oil a little over (up to the F on the stick) and in 20'000kms and 3 oil changes it's never moved.

Hi there....dont panic just yet, at least you have caught it early.

My injector seals started leaking at 70000km. I did a 300km trip and when I checked my level at home it was about 2 inches above the full mark.

Have now done 6000km since replacing them and no further problems. If it is a cracked head you can sometimes see the crack inside the injector bore. This is not that common on later Td5s unless they have been overheated.

And I agree with the other guys. Prolonged use with contaminated oil can cause big problems with engine bearings and turbo.

Once fixed make sure you do a few oil changes to flush out the engine.

I would go with the suggestion made by 'fluids'. Do an oil change (or two) to get the contaminated oil out of the engine and then watch the level like a hawk to see if it starts rising.

    Hope this helps

Oh... and if the level does start rising I would just do the injector seals first and see how that goes. It might cost a few hundred bucks and work out ok. If you end up with a cracked head the first few hundred buck will be the least of your problems. Hopefully all will be well.

For peace of mind its worth testing,if there is diesel there they will find it and tell you the % contamination.
No need to drop oil, they can draw it up thru the dipstick.
I would be testing if I was concerned about mine. Its CHEAP compared to a motor failure.

    i feel your pain!!!

just discovered today that my engine oil has diesel in it too, not much thankfully the oil is about 6-10 mm over the full mark and the old blotting test on the paper towell revealled a nice diesel bloom great its been a month since i changed the oil and the fuel pressure reg i hope its just the injector seals leaking i cant afford to replace a head i might as well part the old girl out if that happens i hope it works out for you robotd5....... and me too!
