If you have a V8 I am not sure on the issues with blown manifolds as I own a TD5 and I'll leave that to more education members.
As for the TD5 I have had the same issue for which I was quoted around the $400 mark, but I can't be sure of the final price as I had a myriad of other work carried out at the same time.
If you have a TD5 you will probably find that some of the standard studs from the head to the manifold have broken off, this will cause the rattling sound of the metal gasket (you can also get a whistle as well). This is a common issue and a fairly straight forward fix for your mechanic.
If this ends up being the problem, the manifold will need to come off and have it's mating surface to the head skimmed flat (some people will say the webbing on the manifold between the port should be removed - I didn't as advised you an independent LR specialist not advisable). All the old and broken studs will need to be extracted from the head and replaced with hi-tensile ones - these are same ones LR uses to mount the Turbo to the manifold. Why LR used softer studs instead of the same hi-tensile who knows. Obviously you will need a new gasket as well when refitting.
As for a mechanic in Sydney I will have to leave that advice up to some other members.
Hope this helps and all the best.
Tony
