Anyone advise on exhaust system parts?

Hi all, I've a blowing manifold (LS) and likely require a newie' (makes a good rattling sound during acceleration till warmed up).

Can anyone suggest a price guide, or better still, advice on where to go, before I'm floored by the dealer networks?

    Many thanks.

    Parts Guide

    Crashtest

You need a copy of Microcat

Do a search on this forum (I think under general chat).

On this you'll find out where to get a copy of Micorcat. (I think you can also pruchase a copy from the Forum under 'Dave's Interesting Things').

Micorcat lists all the parts and part numbers for all Range & Landrovers.

    Regards
    Andrew

    Hi Crashtest,

Firstly, is you Disco a V8 or TD5?

Secondly, for the purposes of your exhaust you don't need a copy of Microcat, even though it is a handy thing to have when acquiring parts, it won't solve you exhaust issue. As for a secondhand manifold - not necessary.

If you have a V8 I am not sure on the issues with blown manifolds as I own a TD5 and I'll leave that to more education members.

As for the TD5 I have had the same issue for which I was quoted around the $400 mark, but I can't be sure of the final price as I had a myriad of other work carried out at the same time.

If you have a TD5 you will probably find that some of the standard studs from the head to the manifold have broken off, this will cause the rattling sound of the metal gasket (you can also get a whistle as well). This is a common issue and a fairly straight forward fix for your mechanic.

If this ends up being the problem, the manifold will need to come off and have it's mating surface to the head skimmed flat (some people will say the webbing on the manifold between the port should be removed - I didn't as advised you an independent LR specialist not advisable). All the old and broken studs will need to be extracted from the head and replaced with hi-tensile ones - these are same ones LR uses to mount the Turbo to the manifold. Why LR used softer studs instead of the same hi-tensile who knows. Obviously you will need a new gasket as well when refitting.

As for a mechanic in Sydney I will have to leave that advice up to some other members.

Hope this helps and all the best.

    Tony

Pretty much on the money however with regards to the webbing, you are best to have it removed. The webbing is a byproduct of the casting procedure for metal flow. The problem is that it causes a stress point across the face of the manifold during heatup and cooldown and becomes more pronounced when manifold runs high temps. Removing the webbing allows individual ports to move separately from each other and subsequently destresses the whole face.
Once this is done, have the face surface ground and your done.

    Cheers

You can put in bigger and more tensile studs to stop the stud breakage, however this won't stop manifold cracking and warpage which is the issue in the first place causing the stud breaks.
On top of that it will still be putting stress on the studs.

    Cheers

    Aftermarket manifold

I have readl lots about oversize studs, grinding out webbing and high temp coatings. Has anyone got any experience with after market manifolds like this one from perth

Landrover Tuning :: High Performance Manifold Discovery II Td5 - Engine Tuning Discovery - Discovery

My manifold warped 2yrs ago, LR put in oversize studs, refaced and it has warped again (and prob popped the studs again). Its a standard motor and I am not in extreme temps etc.
