no.
hi all, i am buying a new car soon and it seems the disco 2 has a weak auto box is this true?
no.
Can i get some discussion going on this. I have a 2000 td5 auto with chip, now have upgraded trans cooler and after this was installed it threw a trans cooler line. apparently the heat caused the soft weld (?) to melt. Anyway lost all the fluid and drive and was towed home. After having new (2) transmission cooler lines fitted I have now come across another problem. The auto trans is over revving between gear changes. I am now led to believe that the auto trans is slipping. Thinking the worst, a new auto transmission or rebuild will be the order of the day. Any suggestions, discussion or ideas would be most helpful ... I am towing a 2.5 tonne van most of the time and wish to continue to do so. The td5 disco has done near 250k now .... Is it time for a new transmission? Am I asking too much of the disco to pull such a van. It is my first landie and after much deliberation prior to purchase and worrying over whether the car was up to the job I was initially very pleased with the performance, economy and towing ability. I am now starting to doubt whether i have made the right choice. ......................... Frustrated I am ... willing to listen I will......prepared to stick it out......but how much do i spend............,,, thanks for looking....... oh and will an EGR removal kit (???) help keep things going well for my desired result. ..............cheers..What is the general consensus for towing a 2.5 t van in which gear up a long slow incline like the adelaide tunnels toward the freeway. Top gear - or top gear with sports button activated - or third gear or any variances.
I can't recall hearing of auto gearbox failures in general although have heard that a transmission cooler upgrade is considered a good investment if towing heavy loads. I am only aware of one person on this forum that has upgraded their transmission cooler and he does'nt really tow heavy loads frequently.
ZF transmission have a good reputation and are used in many brands of vehicle.

thanks
Yeah, i thought having the upgraded trans cooler installed would be the go, as i was towing and having trouble with the auto trans locking out cos' of overheating. Would anybody be aware if slipping (over revving between gear changes could possibly (hopefully) be just a shortage of fluid in the transmission.
The gearbox lines into the cooler are prone to coming apart.
This has been known here for quite some time.
add it to D2 front prop shafts and sump bolts.
How long since the trans has been serviced?
If towing, service every 20K.
Synthetic fluid handles heat better.
ZF offer exchange boxes at a very reasonable rate.

Yeah have phoned Zf and seems quite easy to do a change over.
Although as has also been stated to me, that a low k second hand unit maybe a good replacement as it has come out of the factory with all the correct settings and change points and the like. Nothing like a unit from the factory as opposed to recon unit from an unknown technician (?) pressed to do three or four recon's per day and then may also need thsi or that component that may also up the price. Atleast the low k secondhand unit is a fixed price. its a big outlay and i am not aware of any other way to test an auto gearbox without having it taken out (at expense) and then the job is half done and a replacement unit mite as well be installed at that point........still undecided....but i am talking myself around i guess.
Thanks and any ideas are appreciated or any experience with a slipping auto box.
I can comment on this as I have just gone through a Engine then Auto replacement. was slipping between third & fourth. Originally when I first bought it changed the oil and filter, was very silver in the oil. The D2's with 4.0 & diesels had the 4HP22 fitted. 4.6's (O'seas only wasn't it?) had the 4HP24, the difference being in the pump. Rebuild kits are identical.
After fitting a new 4.6 it very quickly required a new box. Took it to a external service guy who stripped it and the previous owners had stuck to the non service schedule. was burnt in both the 3 & 4 gear clutch packs. I had the whole box rebuilt, a HP24 pump fitted, new bearings and clutch packs (with extra clutches fitted, can be done if you shave down the shims). Also rebuilt the converter (all by hand, amazing stuff that was explained but goes straight over my head).
$3000- all up, told only to use Penrite Sin ATF. The only stuff he uses even in his ultra high HP drag boxes. Just change oil and filter once a year.
Have to agree with the cooler lines, had a nightmare this week trying to keep them on. Looking at getting a spare cooler and swapping to better hydraulic quick release couplings. Would there be any interest in upgrade exchange units?
Thanks for that info, best advice so far is a low kay changeover, as it was made in the factory to factory specs and should be the best thing to solve my probs as doing a rebuild or service is prone to cost blowout as once it is out of the vehicle and on the bench it is up to a technicians opinion that other pieces need replacing and there goes the cost....thru the roof...... still waiting for the job to be done. I have now heard from Rowle and Searle (auto trans specialists in Adelaide) that a disco two transmission is not necessarily a heavy duty unit for towing heavy loads. Although.......any takers on this subject........
