    Huge TD5 problem

    Hi;

A colleague has a problem with his '04 TD5 Disco: The engine starts normally and runs fine at idle but only for a minute or so: after that suddenly starts to rattle seriously and a thick black smoke comes out of the exhaust. If I leave it as it is, after a few seconds the engine stops, and it won't start again.
In paralell, the following fault codes were registered:

FAULT 27-01 injector 1 peack charge long (LOGGED)
FAULT 27-02 injector 2 peack charge long (LOGGED)
FAULT 27-04 injector 4 peack charge long (LOGGED)
FAULT 27-05 injector 5 peack charge long (LOGGED)
FAULT 28-03 injector 3 peack charcge short (LOGGED)
FAULT 28-07 topside switch failed pre injection (LOGGED)
FAULT 31-03 injector 3 open circuit (LOGGED)
FAULT 32-03 injector 3 short circuit (LOGGED)

Cleared fault codes and started it again, same issue, code reading results:

FAULT 27-04 injector 4 peack charge long (LOGGED)
FAULT 27-05 injector 5 peack charge long (LOGGED)
FAULT 28-03 injector 3 peack charcge short (LOGGED)

I don't think that all injectors suddenly failed at the same time.
Another thing: I've noticed that the fuel pressure regulator developed a serious leak - I wonder if air enters the fuel circuit these problems could appear - dunno but how can air get inside a pressurised system?

I would appreciate if somebody could help us - maybe you have experienced a similar problem? Thanks in advance, let's help him in order to avoid setting his car on fire :-)

Sounds like "Oil in the injector harness". Pull the plug on the front lower right of the rocker cover and check for oil.

I never had the fuel leak issue but if you PM Stuuu he recently fixed his. I believe it is an O-ring that fails.

I just found some drips today after getting underneath for something else .

In park, N and rev it idles as it usually does, but in all forward gears, it develops a vibration at idle that doesnt go away until you touch the throttle.
The only time its not present in D 3 2 or 1 is when its cold.
Did a quick check of the harness and again there was a small amount of oil in the plug at the head so assuming that its got back into the ECU again after cleaning a few weeks ago.
Looks like the chip is off the cards again for a little while as i need to do this and the regulator now .

At least I can do the reg, intercooler and manifold all together now in the same job, with the manifold off make getting to the reg a bit easier. Just need to get the Provents to go thru as there's no point doing the IC and manifold only to fill em up with Arab juice again...

    Cheers (I think...)

    Hmmm...
bad ECU it can happen - I think this is the worst scenario
Wonder if I take out the ECU from my disco and try to start the other one with my ECU - is that simple or it won't start?
    Earth - will check
Leak- will be fixed with a new regulator
old Ecu - will be checked for oil ingress
    Loom - will be changed
Red connector - a very little amount of oil found, had been cleaned, but the same issue persists
    No MIL lamp on

Thanks for the useful posts - specially Bellmore

Now you have found oil in the harness first up remove the sealing plug in the red ECU plug,it allows the oil out.Remember to replace it before doing any serious water 4x4ing.
You only need to replace the INJECTOR HARNESS.Around $200,easy diy.
Oil can be removed from the main harness using metho spirits and then hot water.
    GOODLUCK
