Took the kids up to the snow yesterday with a mate (pajero) and the D2, On the way we thought we may as well do some light 4wding through warby, before we headed further up.
D2 did it all with ease, CDL on and then low some of the more deeper stuff. One tricky section where the car got a good bump into the rut, with a bit of a bang, so now I am minus the top section of my rear bumper which has now vanished.
So heading back down the dirt track, time to disengage Low. Stop put into nuteral go to just CDL, into drive, Nothing…., try reverse, nothing. Try to put it into park, and get a severe grinding like noise, and it won’t let me put it into park. SH*T. I think I have blown the auto.
Great stuck in the bush with two small kids, immediately start thinking I have to get it to the main road, tow truck from there, ruined day etc, etc.
Select low again into Drive and we are off, no problems!
So we get to the main dirt track, stop for a couple of minutes, and I try to carefully select drive and reverse without CDL or low selected, and it works! We drive along again for about 10 minutes and a few bumps, and we loose the drive again. Select low, drive and again we are off. This happen 2-3 times throughout the journey back to the bitumen.
Get to the bitumen, disengage low, select drive and again we are off now problems, drove smoothly no noises all good. Drove to the snow and home without another issue. All on sealed road about 100k’s.
So what is going on? I initially thought the auto was overheating, but being about 5 degrees outside and really light 4wheeling, this could not be the case (I am not an experience 4wdriver either). So next thought is a loose wire in or around the transmission? There was no bang, nothing, and when we did get drive back under high range it was as smooth a silk, only when we hit a major bump we would loose drive and have to select low to get drive back again.
When we did not have drive if you tried to put it in park a massive grinding noise came from the car, however not a metallic type noise, more like a very fast machine gun going off is the only way to explain. If you tried to select drive or reverse the revs changed like it was trying to find the gear, but put your foot on the accelerator and she just reved in gear.
Before she goes the the LR mechanic which I am thinking I will wait until next service, is there something obvious happening here? As I said the car is running beautifully, just seems to have an issue with bumps in dirt roads.
Sounds like it's dropped out of gear in the tfr case. If the tfr is in neutral and you select a gear in the auto then go back to park the auto is spinning as there is nothing to stop it driving (the tfr is open). When you shft back to park the auto tries to stop itself on the parking pawls. Doesn't case major issues but wouldn't make a habit of it either.
Yeah thought the same thing, that's why I kept playing round with the hi low selector, however once I got drive under normal conditions with no transfer case engaged, when we hit a major bump, I would loose all drive again. Stop put it in Low then would get drive. Then after a while of driving like that I would stop again and be able to disengage low and get normal drive. This happened several times when there was normal road settings if that makes sense.
It also would not drive with CDL enaged by itself (no low selected)
It would only drive in low alone.
The CDL lever was installed about 6 months ag, maybe an incorrect fitment if it 's not the auto?
Could be something in the cable adjustment no quite engaging the tfr gears fully so when it gets unloaded it pops out of gear. Not sure about the CDL/Low issues (still waiting to convert mine).
If you have drive I wouldn't worry about the auto (unless it's playing up while driving) I only yesterday got mine back on the road after the auto rebuld and had to adjust everything as it did the same thing reversing out the drive for the same time (popped out of high).
The transfer case is always engaged, if in low or high range.
It sounds to me either something is astray from th einstall of cdl or it just has never been used in low range and may just need some shifting to make it engage.
I once had a RRC that never had low range engaged ever.
The owner always wondered what those levers were for.
I spend 1 week just driving around paddocks to loosen it up and get it to stay in gear.
Worked fine after that.
I don't know if it applies to the D2, but my '86 Rangie disengaged the CDL on a very steep track near Dargo years ago. Very scary
Later investigation found that the hand brake cable was up against the CDL selector cross link on the gearbox and after going over a bump would push the CDL out of engagement. I tied it off to the side with some wire and that solved the problem.
The issue is actually going from Low to normal drive. Low and cdl - work fine, disenage low to normal drive, and select D, and nothing. No reverse either and when you try to select park it grinds.
Select just CDL (light on dash) still no drive. Select low and presto we have drive. Then after a few minutes of driving under low stop try to get normal drive, and it's all working.
Driving down dirt road in normal drive, hit a bump and loose all drive from the transmission, it just revs when in D, no noise, no bang nothing. Stop and select Low and presto we have drive again.
Since getting back onto the bitumen in normal drive no issues whatso ever.
That's why I thought electronic, however since installing the CDL this is the first time I have been 4wding, I am now starting to think it an adjustment somewhere.
The grinding going into park is the gearbox spinning away when it has no resistance in the driveline. Engine spins torque converter and the gearbox and transfer have nothing to keep them stationary (tfr in neutral) so the TC just turns the gearbox/tfr case. When you put it in park the gearbox is trying to stop itself on the parking pawls.
Normally when you put it in park the engine would be turning and the torque converter (gearbox side) stationary so there would be no noise. Whats happening is the same event you get if you put it in park while driving, only marginally less traumatic.
I found that with my D2 when I first started using it off road that I had to make 2 separate movements low to neutral & then neutral to high or it would jump out of high range.
it has got better with use (I dont think it had been in low range much before I brought it)
