I have a 2001 td5 currently 232,000ks,towed a caravan around aust twice, and done some major trips both on and offroad, last 1 being the Gunbarrel and Canning stock route..
When I compare it with other cars problems/issue's I do it against my AU series 3 ford ute.
The ute now has 155,000ks and all highway ks,sure its carried heaps of stuff, but its a 1 tonner and thats what I baught it to do..

I can assure you that when I look at every cost that both have cost me in Parts/ service /and general wear and tear, the D2 leaves the ford for dead..

I would spend more time working on the L/R sure, but thats because it goes to places that are away from help, so it needs to be in top order, but in the last 2yrs the landie's been off the road for a clutch and harmonic balancer.
The ute has been thru 4 steering pumps,1 exhuast system, and several other major oil and fuel leaks, and a head gasket, so its acually been more unreliable than the D2..

I personally believe that the D2 in its day was a very advanced 4x4 and with that will always come some issue or another.

Thats my 2c worth, if its a landie or whatever, hope you enjoy the 4x4 expierience..

    Cheers Ean
    Hi Ean

Sorry it's off topic but is there anyone you recommend for mechanical work on your d2 in Darwin?

    hi MATTB
As other people have stated the problems with the discovery are known problems you will find them all here. Me personally I have had 3 discos 1 1993 2door V8 , 1 1995 es V8 , and my current one a 1999 TD5 . Purchased it for 12 grand from a dealer in sydney 3 years ago had 196,000 kms on it with full service history (very very important) Have now spent another 4 grand on extras (bullbar ,winch ,suspension etc) If you purchase a so called hi km disco ensure log books are up to date no matter what one you pick . As far as being mechanical minded you can do the basic servicing yourself (changing oil and oil filter and air and fuel filter always use good oils I use Penrite) . Even the problems that crop up arn't that hard to fix yourself or find a good LR mechanic to do the hard stuff . the parts are about the same price as other 4X4s . If you buy one its your choice but personally i'd choice a TD5 it goes great with fantastic fuel economy I came back last year from a 20,000 km trip to the Kimberly region Alice Springs and Normanton in the Gulf averaged 15.4kms/100 towing my 1600kg camper. I only had one bolt come out of the shock absorber easy fixed . Maintenance is the key to every good 4x4 treat it right and it will reward you 2 fold . Good luck I hope you find something if you pick a Disco you will love it .
    cheers Mark
