    Stereo pains

Has anyone ever installed an aftermarket head unit in a D2 but maintained the use of the standard speakers & amp?
The unit I've bought has miraculously got identical plugs to the LR but although I can see the cd counting as if it was playing there's no sound?
Was thinking that for some reason there's no power getting to the amp therefore no sound getting to the speakers? Not sure how to combat this, I've considered awiring harness but I don't believe they make them for an Eanon head unit.
    Cheers

I would be surprised if the wiring on any after market stereo head unit was the same as the Landrover, even if it shares the same plug. And I'm not sure what you mean by a Landrover "amp". As far as I know, there is no amp in the original Landrover stereo system - mine certainly didn't have one - but maybe the more upmarket models did - I don't know. My D2 originally had a Landrover 6 Disc CD stacker under the seat as well as the head unit, and speakers in all 4 doors, but no amp.

I installed (well, my son did really) a new Sony head unit in my D2 yesterday, and in my case it was just a case of unplugging one head unit and plugging in the new one - but mine had Sony Explod head unit, speakers, amp and sub fitted in place of the original LR system about 3 years ago. Originally, the LR CD stacker was what failed, and as it was virtually impossible to find an after market CD stacker that was compatible with the Landrover head unit, we replaced the entire system with Sony. Yesterday's new head unit was iPod / MP3 / Bluetooth unit (the older one wasn't), so now I can play my music directly from Blackberry through the stereo using Bluetooth connection, and it doubles as a hands free kit for the phone at the same time - son bought it for me for birthday present. At the same time, we finally got the backlight working in the Landrover clock which has never worked since the day I bought the thing.

I think the amp is under the front passenger seat, otherwise I can't work out how 4 speaker outputs from the standard deck can be split into so many speakers without an amp?
Need to do some more research I think, otherwise I'll just forget the original wiring loom and start again. Run the two front doors and two rear doors from the headunit and put a 2 channel amp in to run may e a 10" sub in the back.

In a D2, (and I freely admit I have not looked at the post 2003 models closley), as far as i know, there are only six speakers. 2 front doors, 2 back doors, and 2 tweeter in the a pillars. The tweeters will be running off the front channels with capacitors in line to remove low frequencies, so they don't cause excessive drawing of power on these channels.

I believe it was only the D1's with the sub unit in the tail door that had satellite amps running the various speakers. Right pain to rewire for an aftermarket unit.

Anyhow you should be fine to rewire at the headunit plug in the D2. Once you've identified perm 12v+, switching 12v+, and earth, a AA battery with a wire off each terminal crossed on a pair of speakers wires will give an audible pop, identifiying the speaker you have found. Just be sure to be consistent with your + and - speaker wires or you will have a crossed set of speakers. This means when one cone is pushed out with a noise, the other will move in reverse, thus cancelling the sound from the first. This situation most noticably cancels the bass sounds.

    cheers
    Nick

One main speaker in front doors + two tweeters each side, one main speaker in each back door + one tweeter each door, two speakers I believe only for bass in the back door (tailgate).
Might just go the whole hog and replace the lot.

A quick addition tells me Discobaker and I have the same stereo,, 11 speakers including the sub on the rear door.

So any replacement head unit will need 3 pre-outs,, $$$
and theres still no guarantee the steering wheel controls will work,,

I'm close to installing my GPS that has a micro SD card and FM transmitter,, so maybe I can keep the HK head unit,,

Pedro do you have one single speaker in your tailgate or two 6.5" bass only speakers?

    To the OP,
I believe you are on the right track and may just need a bit more info.

The discovery 2 had two main stereo configurations, the top model configuration you are referring to as 12 speakers, that's 2 in each front door, 2 tweeters in front A pillars, 2 in each rear door and 2x6inch subwoofer units in the rear tailgate. This system does include an amplifier mounted underneath the passenger seat and is often referred to as an 11 speaker unit as the sub module is seen as 1 speaker.

The amplifier accepts 4 speaker signals at a speaker level output, ie Front Left & Right, Rear Left & Right. The amplifier then deals with sending the appropriate signals to each set of speakers.

What you are trying to do is correct, install an after market head unit in place of the Alpine factory head unit, and then run the 4 speaker level outputs from the after market head unit to the amplifier.

Where I think you are tripping up is that I am highly doubtful that the Alpine socket from the OEM unit would match pretty much any current after market head unit... Do a search on the Internet to find the wiring diagram for the factory radio and review the wiring and you will get there.

Things to keep in mind; the amplifier requires a 'trigger' signal to turn it on, this is usually a 12v signal sent from the head unit... I suspect this may not be connected and thus the amp is not powering up.

    Hope this helps.
    Drew
