Maybe? throttle positioner switch?
It's fly by wire? I think as opposed to the V8s cable...
I'm after some hints as to the cause of an intermittent fault on my car ('99 Td5 Disco)
Several times I've had my engine warning light come on and the car will only idle. I can usually shut the engine down, give it 10 seconds or so and start it up without a problem.
I found oil in the injector harness when I had the head off so gave it a good clean and it was fine for several months (No oil at the ECU). Then one morning on the way to work it went into idle with the engine light on but this time restarting only got me 100-200m before it played up again (fortunately only 5km from home).
That afternoon the harness came out for a good clean and it was fine again. At this point I bought a good quality silicon potting mix (for electronics) and filled the harness plug to prevent oil getting in ... All good! (ECU plug still dry)
Since repairing the harness, I've had to do a couple of emergency stops, and both times the engine light came on and the engine would only idle. I've even replicated this in my driveway. This suggested the inertia switch but the behavior isn't what I'd expect for an inertia switch fault and there isn't any need to reset the switch; just shut down, wait 10-15s and away it goes.
Today it did it again when I pulled over to the side of the road for a minute. Went to pull away and the light was on.
The last two times I have read the ECU faults and both times I've got "FAULT 21-06 problem with driver demand (current)". I pulled the injector loom plug last weekend and it is dry.
Any suggestions? I'm still thinking inertia switch but what do others think?

As suggested, most likely problem is the throttle potentiometer. You cant buy a new potentiometer, just a new accelerator pedal unit. Two nuts and a plug. Its easy to replace as long as you can tie yourself in knots to get at the nuts on the firewall. I paid about $85 for mine last week.
When you put it back on, or before, you need to check whether you currently have a two, or three potentiometer assembly. Nanocom can read it for you. When you install the new one, get nanocom to read the new one, and then "write" that one to the ecu if its different. I think a 99 D2 will probably have a "two".If you buy a new one it will probably be a three.
Pretty much, if you install it, and it works, then you have it right. If it doesnt work, change it to the other setting.
Thanks for the suggestions
I had considered the throttle pot but it doesn't explain why it does it in an emergency stop which I can replicate. I tried simply removing my foot from the throttle and I haven't been able to replicate the problem; only if I jump on the brakes does it do it ... Maybe I need to try harder ...

Hi, it is possible the oil has damaged your engine to ECU loom causing a bad connection in some of the plug pins and thus an intermitent fault. This is not uncommon in both TD5 Discos and Defenders.
I asked our spares supplier last year if they had any of these looms for a Disco in stock and they had 85 at the time - they sell lots.

It seems the Defender struggles more than the D2 with the oil in the loom/driver demand error.Possibly because the Defender ECU is further away from the engine???
COULD BE YOU HAVE BEEN THRASHING IT!!!! Driver DEMANDING too much
Hope you sort it.
Any chance you have adjusted your wastegate??? If so I got "Driver Demand Error" whilst tuning my wastegate.Only happend when I pushed the limits beyond the initial fuel cut out when overboost starts.IE first you get misfire due to overboost, then you get limp home as you exceed the overboost value. The failure of the wastegate modulator or the hoses conected to it will also invoke similar issues.I found this out by disconnecting the hose.
GOODLUCK

It seems it may be the accelerator potentiometer after all!
After reading three responses suggesting it was the culprit, I jumped in the car this morning and deliberately flicked the accelerator with edge of my foot. The engine light came on instantly!
Just to check it wasn't coincidence, I shut it down and restarted and did the same thing. The result was exactly the same!
We'd planned a drive down to Murwillumbah today and three times on the way down the engine light came on and the accelerator stopped responding.
The last time I flicked the cruise control switch as it happened and it continued along with the engine light on. This seems to verify that all other sensors etc are fine and it is in fact the accelerator potentiometer.
Hamish, did you buy yours through a LR dealer??
Thanks for all the responses guys. Once again, my subscription to the forum has paid for itself.

Just make sure you get the right one. Your's should be a 2 pot one being a 99MY. Later models have a 3 pot. I'm not sure if the early Td5 ECU's knew about the 3 pot version from at least 02MY onwards you can change this in the Td5 ECU.
