Price vs. Km vs. age - Which one?

We're in the market for a D2 TD5 Auto, been looking at a few on carsales and see they vary ALOT, the main objectives for this car are towing a camper trailer to the cape and eventually around australia. i have a bit of a list of things i want to do b4 it heads of such as H/D suspension 50mm lift, steel bullbar, long range tank etc...

The debate is to spend less on a good older, higher Km example and can afford to spend some coin on it straight away, or go for a newer model such as a D2a with mediocre Km or an older one with higher k's for more money and wait and psend coin on it. most we want to spend on one is $16,000

    There are a couple i have my eye on, for example;
03 D2a 201,000km in the high $15k, stock looks very clean - in nsw so have to travel 6 hrs to inspect ( i am in QLD)

    01 d2 165,000km, $15k steel bullbar/sidesteps/uhf - in nsw

99 285,000km $15k rebult engine and turbo, lift, chip, intercooler upgrade, bullbar, steps, 31" tyres, winch etc looks like its been used offroad, still clean however. - qld

99 202,000km $12k lift near new tires and looks pretty clean - nsw

99 194,000km $16.5k, stock, looks very clean has ACE -in qld

they all seem to vary so much, is it worth looking for one with ACE, i have heard how good it is on road, but is it an extra thing to go wrong out there, there are a couple with leather in the price range that look nice with hurricane alloys albeit with 220 odd km.

should i just go on condition and service history regardless of km go for a newer one or what.

ACE is a really good thing to have and from what I have read there isn't that much to go wrong with it.

You should drive older D2's and then a D2a. I have read plenty of people who have said there is no real difference between them apart from headlights etc but I still reckon they drive quite differently. The D2's tend to feel dead in the steering and the D2a's I have driven don't.

That is the way I have found the various ones I have driven anyway.

Good luck finding the right Disco.

    cheers,
    Terry

Trick is to drive them and see.

Also check papers, we have one here in our local paper for $10k.
Even if you have to spend a bit to get it up to date, at least you know whats been done.

There are often some great examples on here in the market section too.
I bought a beauty here. Still going strong.

    Good luck

Go the d2a. I believe that the early d2s have got a funny map issue down when in low range and the vehicle will surge when at idle/low revs under load. I experienced it in a manual when trying to walk through some boulders in a dry river bed. Then there is also the missing cdl bits somewhere in the time before the d2a came out.

    Service history?

I haven't heard of or experienced anything like surging etc when in low range in the earlier D2, so I don't know where that one comes from. And I've pulled some heavy loads through some pretty rough stuff in low range without problem.

Have to agree that the models with ACE do ride much nicer than the earlier ones without - but I'm not sure whether you have the same flexibility with them if you want to modify your suspension - I've heard not, but am definitely no expert on the subject.

There might still be some good ones around with low k's - mine is a 2002 and it only had 65,000 k's on the clock when I bought it (about 4 years ago). Mine is also one of the ones that has not got the CDL AT ALL - the earlier ones still have the CDL internals - only the actuator is missing, and that can be easily reinstated, as many on here have done.

I'd like to have it, but not having it has really not caused me any problem so far, so I'm not likely to chase up the bits I need to put CDL in mine.

Really, the only advantage that a D2a will give you over the earlier ones (apart from the fact that it's newer) is that they have the CDL fully functional, whereas the earlier ones either don't have it installed at all (like mine) or need an actuator to be sourced and installed to get it working. Also, I'm told (and would expect) that the upgraded headlights on the D2a work better than the older ones - but there are ways and means around that if it's an issue.

I'd be asking the question whether you can install a 50mm suspension lift on one with airbags and ACE - I'm not sure of the answer but no doubt there are plenty on here who can answer that.

And just another suggestion - if you don't like a heavy clutch, look for an auto. Mine's a manual and my wife hates driving it because she finds the clutch too heavy - but I don't see that as a bad thing at all.
    Cheers .........

so the difference between a 200K example and a 100K example is not just money---

Are these normal kms for a D2? Mine has 98k and I thought I would be lucky to get $16k for it. ACE is worth it if you have 18" wheels and want a good road car. It was a $4k option in the day so I would think these cars would be worth a little more. If you have kids the DVD system is a must.

A few years ago when selling a Subaru for our daughter with 220,000 kms on the clock, we were told by a dealer that every 20 kms after about 100kms reduced the value by $2,000.

At the time a 120,000kms car was bringing $18,000 and we had trouble getting $11,000 for it. But then I am probably not a good car sales person either.

Wow, those prices made my day..If I could get anything like that for my 2001 td5 I would be stoked...Some 2000-01 models on E-bay sub $11k.

The D2a came out with a bigger I/Cooler and believe a better more powerful ECU map..not to mention the CDL..

On our Canning and Gibb Rv trips the CDL was worth its weight in gold, and even tho I haven't done the Cape yet would think it a Must Have for that trip.

I think you need to look around alot more as I think for what you want there are plenty of good cars around for the same if not cheaper than those you have quoted...
A good service history would be on top of my list..Remember there are a few of these around the wreckers now so good used Acc are available..

    Cheers Ean
